I feel so shallow for caring about my birthday

On Wednesday I turn 24 and the day itself, Sept 17, doesn't count for anything, it has nothing to do with my accomplishments and yet I get that tingly feeling as the day approaches, like something special is going to happen. Of course its cool to get birthday presents, but in a greater sense, I dont deserve them.
Does this feeling of caring about your birthday ever go away? Is it completely societal? If I lived alone and had no family and no friends, it would never come up, so is it purely influenced by friends and family?

for me, i like it to still be acknowledged, but i dont go announcing it to the world. I like it to kinda sneek up on people. You find out who truely remembers it instead of them remembering because you brought it up a week before. happy early bday.
