What would happen if I didn't pay my taxes?

What if I just took the refund checks from the state and federal and didn't pay the amount due from the other state that I lived in?
Will "they" just contact me in a few years and ask tell me I owe them money? I heard of lots of people who don't go to jail right off the bat.
I know i know- just pay the freakin thing- but hey- I could use the refund money to pay off these tour tickets.

You would throw that state into a deficit, and the governor will have to make spending cuts on schools and medical programs. Children will become illiterate and the elderly will live in pain.

I once read a statistic which said that if Californians paid their outstanding tax debts, the state deficit would be 90% paid off. Right now as a result of the state deficit, teachers are being laid off and state-funded hospitals are closing their doors.

Probably wage garnishment, liens, nasty letters, bad credit, etc. Bottom line, definitely not worth it. ;)

    I agree ^
Also, penalty fees. I guess if your credit already sucks though what's it matter. They will catch up with you one day and make you pay. You will also be dead one day. PJ won't tour forever, but the tax man does!

Well I dont agree with a socialist state of having to pay for public schools- esp considering I dont have kids that go to school and I dont go to school.

You can choose if you pay taxes or not? Are they not just taken from your paycheck?

    It usually happens like this:

When you miss the tax deadline, they send a notice requesting the tax return. They will send notices for a while, and eventually, they will compute the tax return for you, based on information they receive (W-2's, 1099s, etc).

However, when they compute the return, they don't know about deductions, exemptions, etc., so they will send you a bill for the taxes owed based only on income.

Once you don't pay, they will keep sending notices. Eventually, they will file tax liens against you (which effect your credit), and eventually, they can garnish your wages or bank account.

All during this process, penalties and interest will be added to the original amount owed.

The best thing to do is ask for a payment plan if you truly can not pay.

Our system is a bit different...we don't fully rely on the "pay as you go/earn system". Based on the number of dependants one has, you can reduce your tax withholding so that your net paycheck is bigger each week. If there isn't enough tax withheld, the person is stuck owing money when they file their tax return.

In the US, what is deducted from your pay is an "estimate". You have to file an actual tax return and either owe or get a refund of taxes withheld (or paid in estimates) in the case of self-employed people. :)

I don't fully understand our own tax system, let alone yours! All I know is that apparently i've been paying too much and I received a cheque. :)

Luckily for the rest of us, people with your piont of view comprise an insignificant minority.
