I might end up with a good job opportunity there. So could someone tell me the good neighborhoods to live in that have homes that aren't $5 million?

My fiance and I could be moving and frankly..I don't have a damn clue about the place besides hearing the metro is a good public transportation system.

Cluelessly yours,
Drew

somewhere nearby...I'd like to be able to afford a decent house. I'm getting married and we have a dog and a cat. Not really into the apartment thing anymore...

real estate is pretty expensive in any of the surrounding areas. i'm a big fan of northern virginia, but cost of living is pretty expensive. arlington is a great area, i've spent a lot of time there for work. had some friends living in rockville, md, too...also a great area and might be a bit more affordable?

I go to George Mason University in Fairfax City in Fairfax County. If your going to be traveling into DC everyday and you want to live near DC, your going to spend some money. Alexandra and Arlington are those areas that are a billion bucks a house. The next most expensive places are Tysons Corner, Falls Church, and Vienna. Although in Vienna you can find a nice house for a decent price. Fairfax you can find a really nice house for a good price like in the 300s or 400s (still a lot but compared to the rest of Northern VA and from where I live in NY, not bad). Fairfax is diverse, the city of Fairfax is EXTREMELY expensive....but look into the county parts. Also look into Burke, its near I-495 and its cheaper.

If you move to any place in Fairfax County, the cops....ARE HORRIBLE. Every town mentioned above exempt Alexandria and Arlington are in Fairfax County. The cops are AWFUL. They fuck you so hard with driving (i've got experience) and how they treat the Mason students.

My other options for you is that, like any major city...the further away you move the cheaper it gets. Check Loudoun County, Prince William County, or Fauquier County. But the way gas prices are I don't know if you would want to sit in the TERRIBLE DC traffic to get into DC or just get to Vienna to take the metro...495 and 66 are a nightmare!

    Other places the check:
    Chantilly
    Centerville
    Springfield
    Oakton
    Sterling
    Fairfax Station

I lived in Northern Virginia most of my life. You could not pay me to go back there!

With that said, if you really want to live there it's going to be expensive. You could look at Lorton or Springfield for a house but I'm sure it's going to cost a lot.
If you go farther out to like Prince William, Loudon etc... your commute is going to be hell. Traffic in DC/No.VA is awful. Best bet is to get as close as possible and metro it in. I dunno about MD, personally not a fan really.

I also went to George Mason... good school. And I also agree, the cops out there are a$$holes.

well one of my friend's (who lives in rockville, md) husband takes the metro to work in dc....

if you find a home you are interested in, select the county in Maryland
then type in street address in this very nosey county data base, besides http://www.homes.com

don't know if VA has this capability yet

I live in Chantilly. There is a lot of access to a variety of things here (in the area in general) but yes, traffic is hell.

The housing slump has hit this area of fairfax county pretty hard. Lots of foreclosures, which would work to your advantage when buying a house.

There is a really nice, quiet neighborhood called South Riding, its just over the loudon county border with fairfax county. Its kind of yuppy, but safe, and close to lots of open areas. (You may also look into stone ridge).

The preschool I work at is in that neighborhood, and every day it seems like there are more houses on the market. Lots of people bought in with the flexible rate ARMs in this area, and now can't afford their mortgages. There is nothing wrong with the neighborhood though :)

I hope this helps. Living in SR would give you a bit of a commute, but lots of folks do it. You can bypass some of the traffic too.

    Good luck!

Edited to Add: You could always come up here for a visit and catch PJ at Verizon Center in DC on June 22nd :)
