Help me with all the new rules of flying!

Please. It is sooo confusing. I know I could go look it all up but with so many of us planning on flying soon I thought we could start a post about the new rules.

How many bags can I check and how many carry on? Does my purse count as a carry on bag?

Shampoo and all my bathroom goodies I know are supposed to go in zip lock bags. Quart size I think? Do those go in my checked bag or do they have to be carried on?

Can I bring any food? Carry on or checked? What about a drink?

I know I have more questions, I'll post as I remember.

And THANKS! I haven't flown since the 2006 tour and things have changed since then.

It depends...on the airline, etc. but generally you can check 2 bags without paying a penalty. You can bring a carry on and one personal item (purse, bookbag, briefcase, laptop, etc). You can bring food, but they'll make you throw drinks out at security. All liquids, gels etc (shampoo, toothpaste) have to be 3.3 or less and they have to be in a quart size ziplock bag. There are allowances for medications, baby formula, etc

oh and yes - the ziplock bag goes on your carry on. You can bring full size liquids in your checked luggage.

Honestly, you'd do better to read the TSA website than to query us here. They actually lay it all out very plainly for the traveler.

Your purse does not count as a carry on. As for your checked baggage, I think that depends on your specific airline now. At least one airline has started charging for the second checked bag so check your airline's website.

Do I have to zip lock my stuff if it is in my checked bags? I have big bottles of shampoo and stuff like that that won't fit in quart size bags.
I won't have anything liquid in my carry on since I can't bring a drink.

I eat low carb so I need to bring snacky stuff, but will put it in my checked bags if that is ok. I really just need to be at a hotel near a WalGreens or CVS I think :D that way I can just buy stuff there.

I really want to bring my own pillow, I HATE sleeping on hotel pillows, think of all the people who have drooled on them, but that would be a PITA to bring.

no - you don't have to put it in ziplock bags if it's in your checked luggage...but i like putting it in storage size bags anyway - helps if the pressure forces the bottle open - it won't mess up your clothes/etc.

I always bring a little blanket...I hate airline blankets and I'm always cold!

Wear easy to take on and off shoes.
Have ID in hand - I use my passport.
All liquids in 3 oz. or less bottles, and all should fit in quart sized bag.
At the security counter, have ID out in hand. Once through showing ID, put it away.
Take computer out of carry-on and put it in bin.
Take off shoes, put in bin, along with your laptop, and quart bag, and put it on the conveyer belt. Take off belt if you wear a studded belt and put it in the bin too.
Put your jacket or hoodie in the bin too. Use 2 bins if you need to.
Put purse and carry-on on conveyer belt.
Walk through the metal detector, which hopefully doesn't go off.
Retrieve your stuff on the other side of the x-ray and pack it up.
You can carry an empty water bottle in your carry on, then fill it up at a drinking fountain once you are past security if you don't want to spend on airport water.

Thanks, I was wondering if I can bring the laptop with me as I'm already bringing the suitcase

Yep - you can bring it - it will count as your "personal item" Just be prepared to take it out of the bag at security.
