hey guys,

i live in england but i'm planning a trip to the states. my grandma lives in houston so that's where i'm going to be heading. and as a growing fan of american sports i really want to take this opportunity to go see some games live. unfortunately, my knowledge of american sports is outrageous so i wondered if someone could tell me roughly when the NBA, NFL and MLB seasons start and finish and whether there is any overlap. i know that baseball is a summer sport and basketball is more of a winter one, but is there any time of year that i could visit the states (for a week or two) and see a game from each of these sports? failing that, just an NBA game and NFL game will do...

thanks a lot for your help!

NBA goes from October through June (preseason through playoffs).

MLB goes from March through October (preseason through playoffs)

NFL goes from August through January (preseason through playoffs)

The NBA and NFL overlap from November-December for regular season games. MLB and the NBA are a little more difficult because the only times their regular season over lap are in April.

  • cheers guys, that's really helpful. can i ask also, how hard is it to get hold of tickets for each of those? bare in mind i'll be in houston so it'll be the rockets, the astros and... well, i love the cowboys so it'll probably be a trip to dallas too. so how far in advance do tickets need to be bought or can you sometimes just turn up at the venue on the night at get some?

Neither should be to difficult, I would imagine. You could alway contact the teams ticket offices and find out what they have.

The Cowboys ticket might be a little harder to get a hold of unless you went on e bay or something like that.

it's probably the easiest to get baseball tickets

after that I have no idea and would need someone from the Houston/Dallas area to talk about their normal attendance figures

Baseball tickets are generally more readily available as they play far more games. NFL tickets are generally more expensive, but Houston Texans tickets could probably be had. Dallas is a long drive from Houston.

NBA tickets are probably high...might be a little tough to come by....a lot of this generally depends on how well a team is playing.

I definitely recommend seeing some Astros games ;)

Astros tickets will depend on the opponent, but most of the time you can get baseball tickets the day of the game.

I believe the Texans took longer to sell out last year than they did in previous seasons(I didn't attend any this year, so I don't know if they eventually did sell out), but as previously mentioned, football tickets are generally harder to come by than baseball.

The Texans parking situation isn't that great from my experience-- I used to park about 5 miles away and just take a shuttle. The Astros have some pretty good parking within just a few blocks if you're willing to pay $10. And if you're willing to pay $15-20, you could park right across the street from the stadium.

I would recommend checking out a college football game if you were going to be in the country during the NFL/NBA season. NFL games can be fun, but college football games are a spectacle.
