The "double standard" thread got me thinking. How do polygomists find their 2nd, 3rd, ect wives? Do they "act" single? Go to bars and pick them up? How does that work?

Basically you just watch and assess your fellow polygamist's children and when they turn 10 you offer the man of the other household a ham and he gives you his daughter and then the brainwashing commences.

Good times. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

I have a feeling ( ) this thread will get nasty, but it's kind of an intriguing question, haha. Do all the wives get along or do they hate each other?

seeing as how polygamy is more common in third-world countries, I'd say you just buy them.

They never see eachother. You keep one in the kitchen, one in the basement, etc...

edit: I should probably mention that my answers have been based off of a combination of a select number of TV shows.

How are they supposed to be pregnant with their 3rd child by the age of 14 if you wait 8 years? I'm not good with math (which might explain why I have no idea how many wives or children I have) but that don't make a lick of sense.

  • "Under The Banner of Heaven" explains it all for you (if you're that interested).

    Basically-
they choose from a pretty limited (relative to the general population) group of women, all of whom have had zero exposure to any media over the course of their lives. They are brought up to know that this is their destiny, and when the time comes, they are married off.
The sects do suffer from some pretty serious & very rare genetic disorders that come from so much inbreeding. They consider this to be a special "mark" from God and further proof that they are the chosen people.

But what Krakauer doesn't realize is that an army of wives and kids can pickle enough green beans in one day to last a lifetime of tasty bloody mary's.

Yeah but a lot of good that does. Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants forbids any vices at all. Including bloody marys.

See how it pays to be an illiterate polygamist?

All kidding aside, isn't it funny how J. Smith was a man who liked his drink... and women (other than his wife).

I started a thread about polygamy here once, I don't think many agreed with me that it can be a good thing.
In fact they really didn't like the idea. I think as long as everyone is of legal age, and not being supported by the government, what is wrong with it? Oh and everyone is consenting helps too!

well, its hard for a girl to not give her consent when she's being raised in a society where there is no room for choice... i mean, if you're forcing your child to have little or no contact with the outside world, and you're only pumping in your beliefs to her, how is that giving the child a healthy choice on how her life is going to end up?

Yeah, I just read it recently. I wanted to understand more about the FLDS group after the raid on the group in west Texas. Also, I was working at an agency that had some of those children in foster care.

It's a really good book although I didn't realize that it's also a true crime story. But that's the gist of it, if God is telling you what to do, then you can you feel justified in doing it.

Plenty of those girls grow up accepting that it's the only way of life they should have. But don't ever think some don't develop minds of their own and start to think there should be another way to live.
