I like to drink, though I tend to over do it when I do drink, I can drink just about anything from tequila to vodka to everclear to moonshine (it gives me the screaming willies though) but I’ve never been able to stomach beer or lager or anything else made from barley and hops or whatever it is.

I especially can’t stand Guinness, I will admit, I’ve only had it in the bottle bought from a grocery store, but it taste like shit. Maybe I didn’t hold my head right or something but it was bitter as hell.

I can handle the Smirnoff Ice though, I can handle several of those in an hour.

I'm the complete opposite. Anything sweet or sugary just gives me a headache and make my stomach uneasy like a kid who just had too much candy.
I only drink beer and red wine. Guinness is my favorite!

Guinness is an aquired taste though. I thought my first Guinness tasted like shit. It's different.. Once you get used to it, you'll be eating any foam on the top like it was ice cream. :D

Here's an idea, get it in the tall cans. Get a 4 pack. Have one beer at a time on different days. Put it in a glass and fill it 3/4 of the way, wait a few minutes and then cap it off.. enjoy!
  • I'm not a Guinness guy, but i'm a beer guy.

Pabst Blue Ribbon, Yuengling, Spaten Oktoberfest, Moosehead, Killian's Irish Red, those are my favorites.

I hated Guinness the first time I drank it, the more I had it........the more I liked it. Now I am hooked on it. I will drink anything, love drinking beers and then mixing it up with a shot every once in awhile.

  • I don't mind vodka, I'm not big on scotch or gin though. Straight up gin is like drinking pinesol.

I was thinking the same thing.

Beer's an acquired taste. Mind you I'd have it for breakfast if I didn't have to drive for a living. There's nothing better and an icy cold beer on a hot summer day. It tastes like candy.
  • Guinness is ok, but i cant drink it fast enough. after two i'm full. I'll just stick to Newcastle

try mike's hard lemonade. actually, try the mike's light hard lemonade. if like the smirnoff ice, i think you'd like these even more. les sweet but oh so good!

and i agree, i cannot stand beer. never could. give me hard alcohol any day. my real preference is rum, but i drink just about any of it. i also love red wine. and if i do shots, it's time to take me home......:p

my husband however, 2 margheritas and he is shot. it doesn't matter how often he may have em, he has never built up any tolerance. and he loves them so, so it's quite amusing...although occasionally annoying. but beer? he LOVES it....particularly guiness....bass....sam adams...etc. the one drink in common we both love - the red wine.

btw - why would you assume the OP is under 25?
i can assure, he is not...but what about his post and/or alcohol preferences makes him seem young? disliking beer but liking the 'girly beer' smirnoff ice?

I don't like beer either - but Mikes are pretty good.

But I really like a good drink :) I used to tend bar so I know a few recipes, here are some of my favs:

    black russian (stoly & kahlua)
surfin on acid (jager, malibu, pineapple j)
pez (jager, malibu, chambord, peach schnapps, pineapple j)
mai tai (rum, rum, rum & pineapple j)
    etc.

Mmm...this thread makes me want to go for happy hour (and it's only 10:50am here!) :) I'll have to post my recipe list here sometime...

I like pretty much everything EXCEPT sweet drinks. If I drink something fruity I can really only have one otherwise it makes me feel sick.

It wasn't meant as a jab. Smirnoff Ice was one of my "gateway" drinks. I liked it then. Can't stand the stuff now.
my husband however, 2 margheritas and he is shot

margaritas = good Patron margaritas = best

I'm with you on that, I don't know if its the sugar or what, but I can't drink a lot of sweet drinks (mike's, smirnoff...)

Margarita like drinks seem to be a little different though, so who knows, I'll stick to beer.

i drink beer. pretty much just beer. a bottle of white wine from time to time.

i LOVE vodka. but its the devil. ive pretty much been banned from dirinking vodka by everyone i know. evil twin, im telling ya'.

the problem is, i can put vodka away like its my fuckin' job. next thing you know ive had a bottle or two on top of a beer here and there. gets ugly.

by not drinking vodka is how i proove that i am still in some sort of control over my drinking. im serious. its not funny, but true.

oh yeah, why the hell did people think the OP was under 25?
    Peace, Love.

You shouldn't start with hoppy or dark beers like IPA, pale ale or Guinness. Most lagers IMO lack real flavor and all you get is that bitter water taste. You should try malty beers like Pyramid Hefeweizen, its an American Hefe so it doesn't have that "Bavarian bite". Corona is also a good starting point, I'm not a lager fan but Corona's are just delicious. A couple other good "starter beers" IMO are Boont Summer Solstice, it should be coming into season soon, check BevMo, and Pyramid apricot ale, personally I hate fruity beers but this one is awesome.

    So, to sum up:

    Pyramid Hefeweizen
    Pyramid Apricot Ale
    Corona
    Boont Summer Solstice

If these fail to tantalize your taste buds then there is no hope.

Just to list my personal favs:

    Pyramid Amberweizen
    Anchor Steam
    Samuel Smith's Tadcaster
    Dos Equis Amber

Beer is a way of life.

Guinness is fucking killer but your first is ALWAYS horrible. A truly acquired taste.

I never liked beer until I moved to Germany. Then I couldn't get enough! :p I do love it but I am picky about my beer. It has to be good. :D

For other drinks, I'm not a fan of girly drinks and LOVE whiskey (esp Irish whiskey).

Hmmm think I'll go grab a beer now. :D

I'm a beer & wine guy. The only time I like hard alcohol is in a mixed drink in the summer. I hate doing shots.

Moosehead Pale Ale kicks some serious ass. Steamwhistle is good too. I'm also a fan of Tuborg.
