question for new york residences

i'm currently considering moving to new york for film school, so i'm trying to figure what would be an average income living there? i hear it's mighty expensive. the film school's website mentions that if i want a roommate the least i'd be paying is $800/mo. but that's only the least. Renting a room in a two bedroom apt with someone would average at about 800-1600/mo. I'm paying $550 renting my own place here in austin. but austin's film school's have a shitload of prerequisites and right now i'm not doing too well academically. at least, not what UT expects for me to transfer.

i'm working as a barista getting paid $7/hr plus tips which average at about an extra $5-$6/hr so i'm making about as much as $12-$14/hr. if the cost of living is higher in new york would my income be scaling at around the same that i make here in austin? in other words, would i be making more monthly? or is it plausible for me to live in new york and survive as a bartender/barista/cashier? i know i'm limiting my job preferences here since i want to dedicate more time going to school. understanding that i might also be taking in loans. can anyone provide me with some info?

  • it's all about "cost of living",... yeah you pay more, but you make more...

i'd say if you are making $14, that could translate to $25 in the NYC market. living here is insanely expensive. check out craigslist... hundreds and hundreds of apartments out there to give you an idea of what you need to spend and what it will get you.

a great alternative.... check out some apartments in hoboken & jersey city, new jersey. much cheaper and you are a 10 minute subway ride from manhattan.

really? $25/hr? wow... a computer programmer makes that much here in texas.

i've looked into craigslist and none of the jobs posted give out the hourly pay. i'll look into the apartments though... although i'm trusting it will be an average of $1,200 if i want to roommate with somebody.

you need to make between $60-70K a year to live alright in the city.

also, that $1200 with a roommate is probably a one bedroom that was converted into two, so expect very tight living. tough to find a real two bedroom under $2500/3000.

    give brooklyn a look too.

but the $2500-$3000 would be split between the two or is that what each both of us would be paying? if it's split between the two then i'm just hoping that new york would pay me enough for me to live. i'm not so caught up living in new york... it's just this school that i want to go to.
