Pretty brilliant movie really.
Works any way you cut it. of course, surprise surprise, Meryl Street and Phillip Seymour Hoffman give amazing performances.
But more to the point the film is brilliant. My parents got in an argument for 20 minutes after the movie discussing, the issue of was Father Flynn guilty or innocent. If he was guilt
The movie works as a scathing indictment of the catholic church and its unforgiveable actions or nonactions, with the final blow being Father Flynn isnt put in jail but is promoted.
The movie works as a scathing indictment of the power of what false accusations can do. What if Father Flynn is innocent? Despite being promoted, he now has a record, and anyone can call Sister Aloysious and she certainly would tell them what happened.
And the movie works in a general sense as a good story.
Brilliant.
I think finding out the authors real intentions and opinions reguarding the point of the film would almost ruin it. The movie is both sides of the argument, and all of them at the same time, and none of them as well.
