Milk

I am the biggest Sean Penn fan around, he's one of the best living actors, one of the best actors ever. His portrayals of characters in Hurly Burly and 21 grams, and his directing of Into the Wild were masterful. Unreal. Life changing.

So of course, I ran to the nearest theater to see Milk, as I am a huge fan as I said, not only of Sean, but Emile and Gus Van Zandt as well. Gus's last few have been almost David Lynchian in their wierdness and genius. Elephant, and Last Days couldnt have been odder movies, but both blew me away.

Milk just didnt register with me. Sean and Emile were great, but it wasnt either of their best performances. I think Sean should win an Oscar ANYTIME he is in a movie, and think he should this year as well, but overall, this movie didnt blow me away.

I dont know maybe its the whole political aspect that threw me. While gay rights no doubt it a hugely important issue currently, I didnt identify with any of the characters. My own personal political journey from rabidly radical political, to reflective non activist may have something to do with my dislike of the film. As it was a very political film. While Last Days, Elephant to a certain extent, Into the Wild, 21 grams, Alpha Dog, all were non political to a point.

Emile, blew my mind in The Mudge Boy and Into the Wild and Imaginary Heroes and Alpha Dog. But I didnt understand his character or him in this movie.

Seems like all the stars were in alignment when they made the movie, Penn, Emile and Gus, thats a pretty impressive cast and crew. But somehow, it didnt translate...

  • I thought it was an excellent movie. I liked the characters, and cared about them. I also enjoy political movies, though, so go figure.

I think it just goes to show how everything comes full circle, especially with the new anti gay marriage laws. And WTF was Dan White's problem? I don't think they go into his character enough in the movie, which was one tiny problem I had with it.
