what does that statement even mean?

What do Godspeed and the Shins have to do with anything?

it implies you'll become some kind of preppy intellectual.

It's a joke. Like, "soon you'll be too hip and cool and pretentious to associate with the likes of me."

The key is to discover Godspeed! before university so you're not a bandwagon-jumping hipster. That's so much worse than a regular one.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

    Of course :D

I despise people who are like "oh I listened to them before they were popular".

Of course, listening to Godspeed! is actually not hip. It's nerdy as hell. Enjoying 20 minute songs with cello and contrabass do not really help you fit into the indie crowd in the same way the Shins do.

As do I. I don't have all day to scour the web for bands to rub in people's faces... so I rely in a little bit of notoriety to bring cool new music to my attention and I won't be ashamed of it!

That said, I don't care for either band. The Shins kinda bore me, and Godspeed is just too weird for me... I think I have adult onset ADD, so I can't stick with it, too abstract!
