Why do celebrities make product endorsements?

I dont get it? People like Tiger Woods or John Legend promoting cars or drinks or shoes. Why do they do it? Its not like they need the money.

Well that's how they make most of their money.
It also makes them more visible, worldwide. Also maybe they like the product.
Take Tiger for example, he can wear whatever shoes he wants. He likes Nike's and he's sponsored by them. He can also use Nike's pull to contribute to charities, also develop better products and such.
Some basketball players like Kevin Durant want their products affordable to people that can't pay a lot of money for them.

Do you think the New York Times makes their money from people buying newspapers for 75 cents each?
Or Pearl Jam making money off of Albums?
