Anyone else a fan?

What I love is that watching his films, you can plainly see he loves movies, and has an enthusiasm about them that is pretty cool.

  • Love his films. The man himself looks like he's a hot rail away from having the cartilage in his nose cave his whole face in. Plus, he's not much of an actor.

Pulp Fiction is the coolest film ever. Not the best, but the coolest. Hell, it's one of the best in my opinion.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Nothing is truly original. Even PF had some tribute ideas and scenes to it. Plus, the story was also co-written too.

Haven't seen Death Proof but love everything before that. My personal fave is Reservoir Dogs. His writing is his best talent and it's really on display in that movie. It's a good thing that he can write and direct so well because he might be the worst actor ever.

He never had an original thought to begin with, although he made a few brilliant movies out of whatever thoughts he borrowed - namely his first 3.

Reservoir Dogs, to me, remains his best movie to date. Great plot, great characters, great dialogue, messed up order which really worked well.

Jackie Brown is a close second. Hugely underrated. It moves a little slower than his 2 previous efforts, possibly because events play out in order for the most part. People had come to expect otherwise. I think it's the most well rounded film though. You care about the characters, and they actually develop!

Pulp Fiction is my 3rd favourite - very very good, but I've grown a little bit sick of it over the years. As Jeremy1012 said, it's a cool movie. Possibly the second coolest movie ever made (the first being Bullitt). Here, it's all about the dialogue, and he pulls it off well. All the segments are interesting and funny in their own right, but putting it all together doesn't always work completely. That said, it is always enjoyable to watch.

After that, (or after Jackie Brown to be chronologically correct) it all went downhill. Tarantino always said he didn't go to movie school, he just watched movies, and each of his films are homages of one sort or another to these movies he grew up watching. Sometimes it's harder to spot than others. For instance, there are a ton of references to various old films in pulp fiction, whether it's in the script or in the shooting style, that I wasn't aware of until I listened to the DVD commentary. With Kill Bill, he took these homages too far. He put in a lot of Martial Arts clichés with a little nod and a wink to the audience, which first time around may have been a little amusing, but doesn't stand up to repeat viewing. None of the characters really give the viewer any reason to like them either which doesn't help. Then there's the script. At this point in his career (and since this he's only gotten worse) QT was really believing his own hype. I'm sure he felt some sort of pressure too though, to deliver that snappy dialogue he was so loved for. So it ends up being forced. It's QT TRYING to write like QT, and trying to be too cool for school. and it just doesn't work at all. It became tiresome to listen to.

Death Proof - Take all the bad points of Kill Bill, double it, then take out whatever good points it may have had. Kurt Russel was cool, but he couldn't save it. "Look at all these old movies that I know and you don't " he seemed to say. "I'm way cooler than you coz I grew up watching shit b-movies". ugghh. Awful stuff.

Other films he was involved in majorly but didn't direct - immediately True Romance and From Dusk til Dawn come to mind. Both are excellent in their own right. Dusk til Dawn should have been his grindhouse movie (for that is what it really was) It's awesome. True Romance is just superb - Thank you Tony Scott for directing one good movie in your career :D

Anyway to sum up - Quentin Tarantino used to be cool, and we'll always have the Jackie Brown DVD to remind us of the good times :) I really hope he has something good left in him.

No - if you read my post you'd see that what I meant was everything he does is done in homage to earlier work.

I, too, look at them as separate films.

I don't think it would have been much different if it was one full movie.
