Anyone tried to get a gig as a roadie or work for a bands management team?

I have always wanted to do this, and oddly enough, I volunteer at a local venue, where, we as volunteers provide the security for the bands, make sure no one steals their stuff. I open the doors for the band to load stuff into the venue, and open the doors for them when they need a cigarette break. No one really big in terms of music stature has come through yet. That said I often wonder what I would say, “I love your music and your cd’s, do you have any jobs available for me”?!!!
So how do you get to be a roadie? How do you get to be one who loads the music equipment for say Damien Rice or Pearl Jam or Ben Harper?
My feeling is that it’s the annoying as hell rule, annoying because I don’t know anyone, of who you know. You probably cant be a roadie or work for the management unless your mom’s brothers son’s friend knows someone in the band or on the crew. Which as I said, is great for people who are connected, but annoying as hell to those of us who aren’t.

i'm quite the problem solver, so that could be fun.

Best thing is to get a job at a club first, then meet your connections and move on.
That is what my buddy did and now he does lights for Modest Mouse. Not a bad gig.
