A quality director that isn't among the best, but is still very good is Bryan Singer. The Usual Suspects and the first two X-Men movies are good films.

Many good ones have been said already but i would add Sergio Leone to the list.

For a Few Dollars More,The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America (full version) are all amazing films

how could i forget sergio? definitely one of the all time greats.

David Lean...only did a few films, but "Lawrence of Arabia", "River over the River Kwai," and "Doctor Zhivago" make up a nice resume. :D

Michael Mann, is often overlooked I find too. He's more about style, but goddam he's good at it. His films are usually hefty enough to work without the style too.

i am also a fan of mann's. have been since manhunter. you know going in, if nothing else, his movies will look good. i feel in heat and collateral he seems to have captured LA's sense of dislocation perfectly.

Spielberg hasn't done a huge amount lately, but his contribution to modern cinema is immeasurable. He invented the summer blockbuster, brought cgi to the fore with JP, and he gave us Indiana Jones!

i think if you look deep enough you will be able to note the presence of george lucas behind a fair bit of spielberg. having said that i do have to acknowledge that spielberg is responsible for my favouritest scene in cinema history. ever. :)

But then you look at Lucas without Spielberg in front, and sob into your oatmeal.:p

well it is interesting that my favourite star wars film, and the one i consider the best, wasn't even directed by lucas. so you could be right about that my friend. and please don't get me started on his crap dialogue. that's when i truly weep into my oatmeal. :)

Did you know that Lucas wanted one of the indiana Jones sequels (can't remember which one) to be set in a haunted house? Oh my god how shit would that have been? Lucky for us Spielberg has some sense and stopped him.
