In preparation for the Dark Knight, what graphic novels/comics should be read?

What are essential batman comics?

the all time best Batman graphic novel has to be "the killing joke".

Heath Ledger said that was a huge inspiration to him while developing his take on the joker.

Killing Joke is a great one.

Batman Year One is excellent, my favorite are Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns (that one is essential), and also Dark Knight Strikes Again (which isn't as popular of a choice).

I've still not picked up Arkham Asylum, been meaning to.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Year One is indeed excellent! also, "the cult" was pretty good.

The Long Halloween and Dark Victory are both good reads.

+1 for Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. IMO, it is the greatest thing to come of the 1980's...followed by the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I just read where the first Watchmen Trailer is going to be played before the Dark Knight. I'm heading to the San Diego Comic Con in a few weeks, and the cast of Watchmen are supposed to be there, along with some footage.

I don't think that you could go wrong with the any suggestions in this thread, but if I was forced to name only one title...it would be "The Killing Joke".

The action figures look killer for the Watchmen movie.
