work scheduling and concerts

can you all give me some advice on what you all do? I know their are some people who even have this as part of their work contracts in terms of going to concerts.
going to concerts is of the utmost important to me. I volunteer at a music venue and try to attend as many shows as possible.
When I got my job, I never really specified hours, which worked out fine. I dont really care if I work on weekends and working early in the day is fine by me. This week however for the first time, I work until 10pm, something that never happened before. The latest in the past I had to work was 9.
working until 10 is tough for me because I cant attend concerts. its too late.
How do I approach my boss about this? I know their are people with kids, and people who attend school so I cant be the onyl person with scheduling requests.
Is it legit to say I prefer not to work past 9, and although that may not be feasible every day, I would prefer to have that schedule as much as possible?
I just dont want to have to work until 10 or 11 which is when the store closes.
I got the job, in large part because I wanted to be going to concerts frequently and multiple times a week. And working until 10 or 11 makes that impossible
The question is, what will my boss say and how will he take it?

most employers will honor requests off made up to 2 weeks in advance. its how I run my store. with requests given on a first come first serve basis.
talk to your boss about the company's policy. it never hurts to ask.
My feeling would be talk to them and say you're happy to work till 10pm most nights, but you have some other things that come up once in a while and hope that you'll be able to finish at 9 on those days. Then go the extra mile in other ways, and work till 10 whenever you can. If you create a good reputation, you are more likely to be able to get the time you need when you need it.
