I got turned onto comics/graphic novels during the summer, and have spent my time since then reading Alan moore, neil gaiman, frank miller, craig thompson, grant morrison etc...

But there seems to be a huge manga (japanese comics) following/section in the bookstores/libraries. Anyone have any recommendations for japanese comic books? What are the Watchmen and Blankets of that genre?

And additionally what are some good anime films? I know ghost in the shell and Akira come highly recommended, but anything else? Whats some good anime?

I got into that when I was first learning japanese. I would recommend Blade of the Immortal for a manga, and Perfect Blue for a movie (anything by Satoshi Kan really). They have both really stood the test of time for me.

I'm not much into Manga. A couple of my friends are, and I have it on good authority that the Neo Evangelion series (that's videos by the way. not sure if it's a bok or not) is frikkin awesome. There's a lot in it to keep you going for a while too..

The Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best Anime series I’ve ever seen.

I’m reading Death Note Manga right now, it’s pretty good (it’s also an Anime series the fourth volume comes out nest Tuesday.)

I'll second that...the series is pretty old (about 15 years) but very good.
