another situation at work

Lately, I've become the informal IT guy at my office. I'm an analyst, but even my novice knowledge of excel has me going from cube to cube helping people out.

So there's this other guy who has for some years been the "go to" guy whenever the software is on the fritz.

Today he made a comment to me about watching out for whose territory I'm tresspassing on. He talked about how he was going to be head manager some day, and that I should think about that before I try to invade on what he considers to be his responsibility alone.

And he's right. The head manager at my office practically loves him because he fixes this and helps out with that.

He said it in a "joking" sort of way, but his comments stuck with me anyway.

I e-mailed my manager and told him that I was concerned that my employability might be in jeopardy if I continue to help people with their excel problems and so on.

I feel like a snitch. What do you think?

not a snitch. dont know if i would have emailed the mgr. if it were me i would have just laughed and told the guy, "hey, ya know what ? your right, from now on you can come help them with any little BS thing they need help with, id rather not do it anyway".
    Peace, Love.

Exactly. I'd be stoked if people stopped calling me to fix their IT problems. Except for the fact that my job is to help people with IT problems :p

This guy is a rising star at work. He is going to be a mgr someday --guaranteed. And he is class A prick. It literally scares me to think he'll one day be responsible for other employees. When he isn't being an asshole to someone's face, he's talking shit about them behind their back.

So, yeah, I agree that e-mailing my mgr was a bit drastic. But, I also feel like I have an obligation to inform the people in control of what kind of person they're backing. I honestly don't think they know it.

If that's the case. Take him down. He'll just be one of the bossy bosses that doesn't do shit.

Guy works hard, though, and he does his job well. If he's made manager someday, he'll possibly contribute in many ways.

I just can't picture him having to write an employee evaluation and doing it objectively. He's just the kind of person who says to himself, "Fuck that guy," and starts making up bullshit negative remarks. I've seen it before from people just like him.

As long as you did it in a professional manner, I'd say you were right to do it.
You definitely received a "threat" from the sound of it.
That is what managers are for and they can't do their job if they don't get feedback. If you felt comfortable emailing your manager, that in itself is a good sign. :)

Thanks. Yes, for the most part, the managers in my office seem to be very approachable people.

Well, thanks to everyone who replied in this thread with their support. And if you have criticism for me, then I want to hear that too.

    Thanks.

guys like this either rise because of kissass or fall for the backbiting behaviour, I will say watch out for the bus anyway you just might get thrown under it, and finally It might not hurt to update the old resume.

If I was going to be a snitch, I wouldn't provide email documentation of it.

I thought about that too. But, I wanted to have documentation of it so that if I ever become a victim of his abuse of power in the future, I"ll have proof that I've tried to resolve the situation with management in the past.

Here's what my e-mail went like:

I am writing you with the intention of requesting your advice concerning a statement made to me by so and so.

We were discussing recent issues with the spreadsheets this afternoon. He added, "blah blah blah tresspassing...blah blah...when I'm manager."

Please be advised that I have been helping other employees with their spreadsheets at their request, and it is not my intention to encroach on his role in the office.

It is not my wish to be at the center of conflict, and nor do I want to be branded as the office "snitch" like Jane Doe, for whom I have deepest respect. Therefore, I hope that you accept this letter as merely a request for your advice on how I should deal with the above-referenced comment, rather than a request for your intervention.

    Thank you.

I hope you don't visist the pit from work....the guy is in IT and you're calling him a class-A prick on the internet :D

I'm in kind of a similar situation...my boss wasn't overly impressed by my work for the first year or so at my job (partly justifiably), but according to my last review, I've won him over a bit. At the same time, I wonder about what the board is hearing about me, and my expendability in a slow down....office politics suck....ass kissing is rewarded, and personality conflicts can ruin you.
