I just talked to a buddy on the phone and he's playing.

    Said it is quite awesome!

Damn, now I have to get Socom (which I was going to get anyways...just lost track of the release date :)) and LittleBigPlanet.

    Are you picking it up?

I think it'll be good (been a Socom fan from the beginning) but I think it'll be hard to beat COD4.

I stopped playing after SOCOM 2 was released. 2 made it so that a person has to get shot like 4-5 times before being eliminated. That was like completely lame, IMO.

I had gotten really, really good at the first SOCOM. 8 kill rounds were not uncommon for me because all I had to do was tap them 2-3 times sometimes less with a headshot and that was it.

Friend of mine works for Sony making games compatible for online use. I called him and said, "You guys really fucked up SOCOM 2." He goes, "I don't design the game, asshole, I make it compatible for online playing."

They're too different for me to really compare the two. I couldn't stand 3 but enjoyed 1 & 2 enough. Thought the gameplay in 1 was the best but thought that 2 had better game modes.

So you have the new one?
I've heard that it's a lot of fun. Some issues, but they are really so small that they don't effect much at all.

Nah. I don't even have a PS3. But going on past experiences with Socom and COD4, I'd still have some problems comparing the games as a whole. FPS and TPS have a completely different playing style.

I like that they focused purely on the online aspect of Socom. To be honest, the single player missions in 1 & 2 weren't really that entertaining or worth remembering. Hell, the only reason to play through the entire campaign in 2 was to unlock a couple of costumes for online play and even then, it wasn't really fun to do so.

So I picked up Socom today and have to say I'm quite impressed.

I got the game with the headset (which by the way is actually a really decent bluetooth headset. Very clear audio) In fact the headset I have found to be better than my Motorola.

Installing the game took a long-ass time, then you have to download the 450mb update, which took a long-ass time!
It was annoying, but oh well.

My first round was on a dark demo map and I had no idea what the hell I was doing. LOL It also seemed like most people were in the same boat too because there were a lot of questions being asked.

The controls are going to take a bit of getting used to...I'm still so used to the COD4 controls.

There were reports of some server issues, but I haven't had any problems getting into any game. I have seen some lag, but it wasn't bad.
Graphics are nice, sound is incredible!!! (I have 5.1 set up).
Gameplay is pretty damn good too.

Overall in the two hours I've been playing I have to say that it's a great game!!

Yea, I heard the headset was really sweet. and wasn't it only twenty bucks more for the headset? that seems like a pretty damn good deal to me. That installing shit really turns me off from the PS3. Not to say that I wouldn't get on if I had the chance but that seems really, really annoying. Is there weapon customization and character customization?

I dislike the PS3 controller for shooters, but it hasn't stopped me yet...
Got my machine back 3 days after sending it out, putting a 320g hd in it...install away

Yeah, the headset is actually really nice. Like I said before it's actually better than my Motorola (which cost 3x more $) The sound quality is super clear!
At first I thought "Why spend an extra $20 for another headset?" but I'm glad I did because it is really good.

The installing is def. a pain, because I'm usually just so eager to play whatever game I just got, but I've gotten to the point where I pop it in and come back later once it's done.

Yeah, there are character customizations and the weapons can be customized in lots of different ways.

The new game has a few old maps from previous Socoms from the past and it's crazy at how nice they look!
Crossroads, Desert Glory were a couple of my favorites from the past and they are there.

    Also...
I like the new communication features in the game. Like before you can press the talk button and communicate with your team. What they added is the ability to proximity talk to teammates (and enemies) if they are withing "talking range" without having to hit the button to talk.
I went into a room yesterday and heard the other team talking on the other side of the wall (there were three guys in there). I could hear them talking, snuck up, grabbed a grenade and tossed it in. Boom! 3 guys dead! Hahaha!

I don't think everyone fully realizes that it is an open mic (proximity) so you hear some crazy stuff. This one dude on my team yesterday who I was sniping with was yelling at his wife to get him a pot pie! LOL! :D I later asked him if his pot pie was good and he was like WTF?!?! Hahahaha!

That's awesome. I really, really glad they changed the talk features. I lost many, many lives trying to talk to my teammates and a dude pops around the corner. I heard that they would have a few classic maps but the only one I was sure about was crossroads. Apparently it was the most popular socom map ever. Personally, Desert Glory was always my favorite. So, how is the hit detectors and such? For example, in 1 it took 3 well placed center mass shots to take down someone, 4 if your aiming is off a bit. head shots always went down instantly. 2 was 5-7 and some times it didn't detect an obvious head shot. About how many hits would you say it takes to take down a hostile and is there any problems with the hit detection that you're aware of?

As far as hit detection goes, I have found this one to be much more realistic than the past. Generally what I've seen is a couple of well placed shots will drop a guy. You can customize your character to have more or less armor (lots of armor slows the guy down quite a bit) so that effects how many shots it takes. If you kill a guy close enough, you can actually see exactly see where the bullets penetrate/hit the guy...it's pretty sweet!
I'm usually sniping more often than not, and I've found that sniping in this is a little trickier than in the past. It def. seems more realistic rather than crosshair on guy = death no matter what. In past Socoms, you could kill a guy with a 50 cal. by shooting him in the ankle. Not the case on this one!

They are pretty good. It was hard getting away from the COD4 controls that are/were stuck in my head.
The default controls seemed a little slow as far as crosshair movement and for example turning around quickly, etc. I kept getting lit up from behind and not being able to react as fast as I'd like. But...
You can make that adjustment in two seconds by going into the options. I set it to "seal level" and it's now much faster and much better! Why the default was set on a slower level doesn't make much sense to me, but it's now a lot better.

Also one thing I noticed is that there aren't as many assholes on...yet. Most people are actually really cool as far as asking for help, etc. and not too pissed off if you lose or suck as I think everyone is in the same boat right now. It will probably change as more people get on and start taking it much more seriously.
