Yesterday evening...I was in there renting a couple movies. While checking out...i had a bottled water...with very little left, which i accidentally knocked it forward a bit...and a real small amout of water spilled into the back of the monitor the women was using to check me out.

Then...the fricken Thing...CATCHES ON FIRE!!!!!!!!....

I am dead serious...i was there blowing on it...trying to put out the flames coming from the back of the monitor...

possibly the craziest thing that has happened to me in a long long time. sufficed to say..i think i will return these videos through the slot, and never return to that store again in my life...

i feel really bad...just not bad enough to offer to buy them a new one. i mean, i have spent a lot of money there over the years...and they didnt ask..so...adios...

    Wow crazy story.
You should have taken a picture.

I never go to those chain video places.

Go to the small ones.... they have porn too.

    Thats my choice.
    Nice to know you.

I think you should at least offer to pay. What if someone backs into your car in a parking lot and decides they want to turn tail and run?

Don't sweat it...they have insurance. I own a small business and while it would affect me, I don't think BB is going to go out of business because of your mishap!

    Funny story...
I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

it's a corporate chain. they can shit a new computer.

but i feel you. that story is a hilarious. i once rented an "adult" film while my buddy was working. he got fired shortly thereafter and the movie ended up late. i never rented there again. didn't want to be asked to pay my late fee for "teen tramps 2" by some cute girl.
    and like that... he's gone.

When you get mad at people do you tend to notice they burst into flames from time to time? If so, you may want to see a doctor.

Last time I went in there it was over $5 to rent a new release.... They can afford a new monitor without your help.

You're doing yourself a favor by finding alternative options. Although I can picture the monitor going up in smoke right now.

Ha. That was probably my best job ever! Now this is back in the Betamax days but there were no big chains and basically everyone was in the store to rent the happy movies. The best is when people would try to cover their box until the last minute and have 4 other rentals to diffuse the situation. Can't remember anyone who looked me in the eye.

    Good times.

So I guess nobody else sees it as a matter of principle? I guess since they can afford it, it's OK? Maybe we should all go vandalize the homes of rich people for sport?

    1. i believe he said he did offer and they declined. *edit, nevermind, no he didn't. but they didn't ask either*

    2. we're saying he shouldn't feel too embarrassed or ashamed to go back there. he was a good customer, it was an accident, and it won't destroy their business.

    3. it's a funny story that you wouldn't expect to hear outside a seinfeld episode... hell this SOUNDS like the plot to a seinfeld episode. lighten up.
    and like that... he's gone.

    Netflix rocks.

When I'm inbetween Netflix movies, sometimes I'll rent from a RedBox vending machine for $1 a night.

well...to be honest...i did feel really guilty about it, and still do. honestly i did...and i very seriously considered leaving my name and number for them to charge me for it, and would have except for a couple reasons. one is that i am in Chile..and that kind of crap here costs way more then it would typically in the U.S. 2, is because the monitor was from like 1972 (probably WHY it burst into flames), when computers just came out...and i could totally envision me buying them a brand spanking new computer monitor and me getting porked for my principles...and three..i am pretty low on cash right now as i am a volunteer teacher here, dont really have a couple hundred bucks to pay for an honest mistake.

my question is...how does a little bit of water make something Burst into flames?? (and no People dont burst into flames when i am mad at them..lol)But...isnt that like the opposite of what should happen (water making fire)??

it was funny though....the clerk (not the manager, who seemed generally miffed about it) seemed to kinda like the fact her computer burst into flames. she didnt even blink...and continued to happily check me out! God bless her....lol

  • The water may have caused like sparks or something and the computers (at least at the blockbuster near where i live) are ancient so those little sparks are all they need to burst into flames.
that is a very funny story though and i wouldn't offer to pay for th comp. don't feel bad about that.

No. It's funny. They should be thanking him for giving them something to laugh about and for lighting a fire under their asses to replace that dinosaur of a computer :p A little different than purposely causing destruction, but if you manage to harness your super powers so that you can light mansions on fire simply by spilling a few drops of water please be sure to capture it on video :)

Based on the responses, I guess we're old fashioned, but I agree with you. If I do something that causes someone else damage, I feel it is right to offer to pay. I would guess that they might decline, but one should offer at least.

I think water is a conductor of electricity, so it probably just aided in some faulty wiring jumping a spark. Sounds like the monitor was probably shit anyways and therefore you shouldnt feel too bad.
