say what you want about the Yankees, but this is a cool thing they're doing. It's being televised on the YES Network. They're starting the Opening Day Lineup, or close to it. What a thrill for the VT players, and the school. George Steinbrenner also donated $1 million to the memorial fund

Great Idea, especially if Arod pulls a hammy during an exhibition game!
  • huh? Like they weren't gonna play someone the rest of Spring Training? I don't get it.

I generally dislike the yankees. tis all.

it is a good thing they are doing
  • You have to tip your cap to them. It's a great thing they are doing. Amidst all of the nonsense that is my hatred for New York it must be said they do good things as well.

    FYI... this isn't that original.

The Phillies play Florida State every year in recent years...
The Braves play the University of Georgia.

It's kinda funny how the Yankees get nominated for sainthood for doing something every other team already does.

  • Yes, but those are all local. The sox play Northeastern at spring training too. What is special is that the yanks are going TO Va Tech.

They deserve nothing but praise for this.

This what I'm talking about, totally awesome what the Yankees have done here. Much better than the weak ass stunt they pulled last week with Billy Crystal.

It was a tragedy however this certainly helps to ease the pain in Blacksburg, VA.

    Kudos to the Yankees organization.

They are the most-recognized name in pro baseball, so their ambassador-ship in this regard goes a long way.

    Well done!

Um, the Philadelphia Phillies local to Florida State?

This isn't unusual to anyone watching college baseball. I can just see past the BS of the Yankees and this just being a PR stunt. Looks like it worked.

Pro teams play college teams in exhibitions every spring. Those games usually happen at the pro team's training facility.

I do believe it is rare for a Major League Baseball team to go to campus and play as the visiting team.

FSU vs Philly was rained out this year, but Tony Thomas, Jr. did lead the game off last year with a homerun against Phillies pitching.

Local to their Spring site yes. Find me an example of teams routinely travelling to play at a college in 40 degree weather 14 hours away from them and I will take back my praise.

Until then dont be such a bitter pill. I am an f'ing Red Sox fan, I have no agenda in praising the Yanks.

Not being a bitter pill. Just common sense. If you think the Yankees are simply doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, you haven't followed the organization.

Positive PR is what makes your team stay successful. (ask the Atlanta Falcons.. Vick, or the San Fransisco Giants.. Barry Bonds issue) I know how they play the game and I'm not referring to baseball... it's big business.

It's a publicitiy stunt. That's all. Good for the VT kids, but the Yankees are doing it for positive PR, if you think the goodness of their hearts you don't see the full picture. I honestly have respect for the teams that do it year in and year out, but they aren't getting the press.

    Positive business move for NY.

Get a grip. Who cares what management's intentions are and what they're getting out of it. I can guarantee that most, if not all, of the Yankee players are happy to do this and aren't doing it as a 'stunt'. It's a great thing to do, extremely charitable and can only be looked at as a positive. Quit being a prick.

Exactly! It doesn't matter what Steinbrenners intentions are. It only matters the positive effect it has on the community.

This is coming from a total Yankee hater.

You guys are right, the Yankees aren't known for their big business activities.

Glad you can't have a discussion without name calling. Shows your capability of having a debate.

    I'm done with this thread.

You are right multi-billion dollar businesses don't have any business interest in their activities. The Yankees are the biggest baseball team in the world because they are smart businessmen. They buy the players. They make the moves. It's a business. Wake up.

I apologize, YOU are correct. Let's denigrate any sort of charitable activity or any sort of move to heal a hurting a distraught university. Let's look for any possible negative underlying motives to this so we can make our Yankee hate and self loathing justifiable. You're right.

What a life you must lead. You probably light up a room. :D

  • They also gave 1 million dollars to the University last year. No one else in baseball did, publicity stunt or not.

    Cynical world.

As a Boston fan, I give New York a lot of credit for this, it was a classy move that meant alot to the Blacksburg community. Kinda reminded me of when teams barnstormed. This totally makes up for that Billy Crystal bullshit.
