a few years ago, i strongly opposed downloading music. i would bug my friends that had dozens of gigs of music that was obtained through downloads. recently i have changed my thoughts and here is the main reason...
Music is considered art right? well there are tons of paintings out there that are art that i can view for free on the internet. if there was one specific painting that i loved, i would buy a print and put it on my wall. so like paintings, music should be free to listen to. if i like an album enough, i would most likely buy it. don't believe me? well NIN released The Slip as a free download months ago then released the physical copy (limited to 500k copies) and i went to the store on release day and bought it. IMO if music was made this way, i think we would have better bands. people would reward the bands that make better music and these bands would thrive, while other bands that are mediocre at best would fade away. even if the bands did not make a lot of money, why has it become acceptable that our favorite musicians should be making millions?
anyways, i feel like this is an unorganized rant, but i just wanted to share..
how do you feel about downloading music?

Also I like to think concert tickets help out too. Will Pearl Jam be mad at me because my first exposure to them was a burned copy of Yield or will they be happy that they have a lifelong fan who has spent plenty out of their own pocket that would exceed what the cost of their albums would?

Whereas, you don't have to be listening to the master copy of a recording in order to enjoy its authentic characteristics.

i guess this depends on who you are. i enjoy music way more than i enjoy paintings and such. to me, the mona lisa would look the same in real life as it does on my computer monitor. however, if i LOVED a painting, i would try to buy a print of it and hang it on wall.
people that like paintings more than music, would probably have a similar view towards music. besides, unless you are in front of pearl jam in concert, have you ever REALLY experienced pearl jam? even if i illegally downloaded all of the CDs, i would still have to pay to see them... and gladly for the most part but ticketmaster can eat me~
I don't get it..........
how much of the money that you are spending on an album actually goes to the artist? i paid for NIN - The Slip even after i had it as a free download that the artist released months earlier. If anything, The Slip had most return to the artist as NIN is label free now. also, when Radiohead released "in rainbows" as a name your price, i sent in $5 and i also bought the vinyl(though whats the final word on radiohead actually being label free?).
i have no issues giving money to the deserved artist. but the way the record labels seem to rape and pillage the bands that they own, really turns me off.

there are many who would argue that compressed mp3's are nowhere near the sound you get from an actual record or cd.

But you never know 100% for certain that you will enjoy food at a good restaurant.
This is true, but the older you are the less high pitch frequencies you can hear, people under 20 can hear higher frequencies so it won't make much difference if its lost some quality, if you don't have a good CD player but have the cd the sound will be poor anyway.
Personally I don't download songs, if I buy a cd and its crap, it goes in the crap part of my cd collection, it's like going to a movie and I end up hating it, there's not even that much of a difference in price these days anyway.
LOL me too!
I don't download anything but PJ boots. Never know what you're really downloading - or who's watching. Besides, need the CD for playing in my car! And to be able to look at the inserts & stuff (esp. w/ PJ!)

You've been burned more than once
You don't think much of trust
If I like the music enough I usually buy the CD and the vinyl.
