Sore Throats

I'm currently getting over one. These are the worst - you can't reach into your mouth and rub it to make it feel better, can't put anything on it, and as someone who sings, I hate it every time I get one. And I get them more often than I get sick (which is pretty rare).

Does anyone have any cures for sore throats, something to take to make it feel better? I've never really tried anything, I usually just bear it for a couple of days until it goes away.

  • hot water, lemon and honey
drink this and then if you drink a feverfew related tea (chamomile works) that will help your scratchy throat (why you want to rub it)

avoid dairy products, as the false coating will actually hamper your throat from fixing itself. ;)

My son suffers from terrible sore throats. I have never found anything to prevent them. One thing that provided some relief (all be it temporary) was drinking a hot drink. As a child he loved Alpine apple spiced cider. It is available in the grocery store, usually on the same isle as Swiss Miss cocoa. It comes in individual packets and you just add hot water. It's non-medicinal and he can drink as much as he wants. Hot tea with honey and lemon also works. Don't drink cocoa because the chocolate makes mucus and that isn't good for the throat.

The sprays that numb the throat never seemed to help. They taste horrid and he always ended up numbing his entire mouth, as spraying something on your throat is more difficult than you think. They sometimes upset his stomach and didn't really provide all that much relief.

He also uses Vicks cherry cough drops - they are sold in a bag at most stores - sometimes they are in a box. We don't use the "menthol" flavored ones just the plain old cherry cough drops that taste more like candy.

Hope you get some relief and feel better soon.

I'll probably try something warm with honey and lemon. I usually drink milk or diet soda with every meal - probably not a good idea when you have a sore throat.

    Thanks for the advice!
