William S. Burroughs - The Place of Dead Roads
'The Place of Dead Roads is the second book in the Western Lands trilogy, which begins with 'Cities of the Red Night' and concludes with 'The Western Lands'. The story begins in late 19th century American west, following the exploits of the young, homosexual, opiate addicted gunslinger, Kim Carsons. We follow Carsons and his gang, the Wild Fruits, through wired western mythology and sci-fi space/time travelling adventure as they attempt to organize the world-wide "Johnson Family", to overthrow the humans infected by a venusian virus which turns them into religious snooping control freaks. All the elements of classic Burroughs are here. There's an abundance of drug frenzy, violence and wicked black humour.'0 -
Finally finished Tana French's In The Woods last night... very slow read, took over two weeks, I usually average a book a week. While it was a good story I think there was just too much filler, not gonna jump to get the 2nd book The Likeness yet.
I'm just now starting Crossroad Blues by Ace Atkins. A combination of southern noir and the blues... hoping this is a good series since I bought all four books!
Why is it that when I find authors I'm interested in their books are always out of print? I know everyone will say get a eReader, but I just can't do that, I like having the books on my shelf when I'm done and the stacks of books I have yet to read. It took a lot of hunting to get all four of the Nick Travers series books, with my luck they will all be reprinted this year! :fp:If there were no Angels would there be no sin?0 -
I'm reading Confucius Lives Next Door: What living in the East Teaches us about Living in the West by T.R. Reid. Very good read that examines a lot of differences between the two cultures. Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

I agree about In the Woods - I thought it started out great, then fell apart and there was no ending.
About out of print books - I've been buying used books from Amazon, it's amazing how many you can find for like a dollar and then you pay shipping. I don't care if I'm getting a used library book, sometimes it's better than getting a new tiny print hard to read and more expensive paperback. And I agree, I like having the physical books too.0 -

I agree. It took me quite awhile to get through it a couple of years ago and I still haven't read the next book and don't have a desire to."We're fixed good, lamp-wise."0 -

I liked it but also have yet to read the 2nd book, which I have had in 'the pile' for a while now.The love he receives is the love that is saved0 -

I read it. I wasn't a huge Tina Fey fan, but seem to like her more after reading the book. Lots of insight to behind the scenes on SNL and she's constantly poking fun at herself. Really quick read too... Finished this:
About the Conan-Leno feud over "The Tonight Show." Fascinating read about the behind-the-scenes of television and how ugly it can get and how NBC screwed it up badly. Couldn't put the book down.
Now, I'm finally going to start the other NBC book, "Top of the Rock", that I posted here earlier, tonight. I'm going to be reading that simultaneously as I read James Joyce's "The Dead" during my breaks at work. That way, I'm able to get through two books at once.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

I've got #3 and #4 in the queue
My local new and used book store cannot keep them on the shelves. I prefer to buy used books when I can, but these babies are proving difficult to come by!
I was late to the party with Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. I read all 6 books over the course of about 4 months. I should have taken my time, but just didn't have the will power.0 -
