A pet Coyote?

Some friends of mine just adopted a baby Coyote. Good idea or bad idea? I'm clueless about animals but this struck me as odd and probably not the best idea.

you can adopt coyotes? i'm assuming these are domesticated ones?0

Hmmm... sounds like a pretty bad idea, considering the fact that even domestic dogs can be unpredictable. While there's debate about whether they should outlaw rottweilers, I wouldn't really want a coyote.'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

As a general rule it is not wise to "adopt" wild animals even if they were born in captivity. That isn't to say the right person with the appropriate knowledge can't do it. It can be done and coyotes are probably a better choice than say... a lion. They are very smart and will often times warm up to people fairly quickly, especially if they are getting food out of the deal. They are likely to snap at children though and might eat your cat, otherwise...Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

good points.
wouldn't want one either.0 -
Bad idea....wild is wild. It belongs in the wild, and it may be illegal to keep it as pet.
I also suspect that if it ever bites someone, and they report it to the state....the animal will be automatically put-down to determine whether or not it had rabies. They are very nervous critters, and will be prone to bite. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.0 -
not a good idea...
If you know what you are doing, in the right environment, you could probably pull it off (hell, the right people safely have bears)... but if it's someone who thinks they can just get a pet coyote and raise it like a normal puppy that you get from the pound as a house pet, they are setting themselves up for trouble. My whole life

Good responses for the most part here. If they have the land, experience, etc. maybe ok, but probably not. I can't imagine it's even legal. Where did they get this pup from?"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." I recommend having a sample of its DNA analyzed for aggressive personality traits.0

A coyote is a wild animal, and should remain in the wild. Those people should adopt a dog from the shelter if they want a pet. On the other hand, maybe the pup's mom had been killed or something so they are "saving" it. However, I doubt if it will work out. A wild animal rescue sanctuary would have been better for the pup.The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals. Ghandi0
