To all the MMA fans on the board we should organize a letter writing campaign to Dana White and UFC to, at least, sponsor some exhibition women's matches. There are so many talented female fighters out there and they deserve the same opportunities as the men.

it seems weird that there's even a debate about women competing. it seems particularly strange in a sport where the men were jumping the same hurdles to get matches ten years ago, even five years ago. the organizations and fans were fighting the same battles not so long ago to get those matches televised, so having opposition to women's mma inside the mma community is truly perplexing. i remember watching the warrior nation series episode on elaina maxwell and gina carano, and dana white said that he had no interest in seeing women fight when asked about a women's division in the ufc. from what he says in reply to the question in the issue is not having enough talent. he may be at least starting to come around. perhaps it's a matter of his own opinion not being in tune with what people would like to see or maybe he doesn't see it as a money maker. i think many people underestimate the potential of the sport and the athletes competing.
the facts that meltzer presents about the ratings speak for themselves. what osborne says is true as well. there are definitely enough talented mixed martial artists to get the ball rolling with a few weight classes right now. with so many of them unsigned or in situations like tara larosa with the afl, where the company is about to fold, now would be a great time for someone to take a chance. 135 and 145, especially, would make for some extremely entertaining fights and would only lead to more talented athletes getting involved.
the fact that there was oppostion from showtime in the beginning to air the kedzie vs. carano match and that no oppoisition came afterward is evidence that all that has to happen is for people to get to see the matches. that match was fight of the night, a great match, and to think it may not have even made the air simply because it wasn't a match between men is just sad. they got a standing ovation for it, and many agreed that it saved the show.
it was nice to see canuck sarah kaufman mentioned there as well. a very tough and talented young fighter who got signed by elitexc who was supposed to face kaitlin young on showtime in november before the closing.
i definitely agree with you, they deseve the same opportunities as the men, and in many cases their performances warrant more attention.
Tara Larosa Vs. Roxanne Modaferri
Gina Carano Vs. Cristiane Santos
Shayna Baszler Vs. Vanessa Porto
Lisa Ward Vs. Rosi Sexton
Julie Kedzie Vs. Carina Damm
Amanda Buckner Vs. Tonya Evinger
Meisha Tate Vs. Kelly Kobold
Sarah Kaufman Vs. Kaitlin Young
Julia Berezikova Vs. Valerie Letourneau
edit: where are we going to hold the event? montreal?
That would be an amazing fight card but I think the event should be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ
My best hope is that White does start coming around. I'm going to be sending a letter to the UFC, to his attention, asking that as a loyal UFC fan and a fan of MMA that he at least give the Carano/Santos fight a chance. Schedule it as an exhibition along with one of his other fight cards. I'm sure that he will be pleasantly surprised with the ratings.
hey, i'm willing to compromise. NJ it is. it's larosa's home state, so fitting that she headlines.
...now to win the super 7 lottery tonight and call jeff osborne to set it up...:)
seriously, i'll definitely write a letter as well. good idea.
