anyone have any information on the outer banks? im thinking about doing a minitrip out there between columbia and camden shows. ive never been there but have heard only great things about it. Can anyone point me in the direction of good information on traveling there, campsites, best places/beaches/hikes, driving times from mainland all the way out as far as i could go. can you drive all the way out and does the road somehow continue back to mainland (aka the scenic route) back up to new jersey? any campsites literally on the water? info any info would be great! i know its a popular place so im sure some of you have been there.

thanks ya!

I vacationed there once many years ago. It was awesome, however, there was a hurricane looming and we couldn't go in the water because of high waves.

But the place itself is nice. We did the Wright Bros. museum thingy and took a flight around the outerbanks in one of those very small engine planes. I would definately recommend that.

They have these things they call Beer-Throughs - drive through beer stores - greatest thing EVER!

Where I was (Kitty Hawk) - there was what seemed to be a miniature golf site on every corner.

Being from Massachusetts (and a regular summer visitor to the Cape) and currently living not too far from the Jersey shore, I just found the outer banks to be different - can't really explain it.

But I would definatley recommend it. Enjoy!!
Don't come closer or I'll have to go

That used to be a yearly vacation destination for me, and I think I'm going back there this year. I've never camped there so I can't help out on specific campsites, but if you're going for more that type of experience I'd recommend heading south to Salvo, Waves, etc. The towns right off the main bridge (Nags Head, Kitty Hawk) tend to be more tourist-oriented, but the whole place is still a great, relaxing spot for a vacation, and I would imagine a great place to camp

I will be heading to the Outer Banks as well for a couple days before the VA Beach show. I am going to Cape Hatterus to visit a good friend of mine who teaches kite boarding. I can't wait.

I camped down in rodanthe at the KOA and it was nice :)

Anywhere in OBX is good....but you should be aware that the hattaras area is pretty low key. Rodanthe is a bit more populated....

  • What a place. Started off camping at the national camp ground. Primitive cold showers and no electricity. Have also been to frisco woods cape woods and the KOA. Both of the woods Camp grounds are a bit from the beach, koa is on the beach. Frisco woods has bay front and is a blast to wade out and soak in the sun set. Be sure to bring bug repellant!!!

Once we camped in August. I swear the sand was turning to glass it was HOT. I freaked out around 3 am sore off the tent canopy stepped on cactus while doing it and ripped the tent. The next day we checked in to a hotel, never camp at a NPS in Aug.

Fires could be an issue depending on the season. Never had a problem at the camp grounds with a fire, on the beach the NPS just changed their policy.

There is a hot bed of controversy now on the right for driving on the beach. I see both sides of the issue.

Food is pricey bring what you can. Bring fire wood. Bring a fishing pole, you will need a salt water license but you will catch fish. Binoculars for bird watching.

As you can see I love this place PM me and I will give you more info!!
