Travelling to Ecuador and Peru -- any tips?

Tomorrow (Sunday) evening, I will be leaving the U.S. for a month-long vacation to Ecuador and Peru.

I know there are a good amount of South Americans on here, as well as a fair amount of world travellers, so I'm interested to know if anybody has any tips for me. Perhaps things I should be sure to bring with me, places I should be sure to visit, etc.

Thanks. :)

That's what the coca tea is for. :) Seriously. That shit will save your life. Just make sure you put some sugar in it. Go to Cuzco, Peru...it's an amazing city with a lot of history and culture...but still a big city feel. Machu Picchu is a must...the train is an experience, but hike if you have time. It's been several years since I was in Peru...but I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

i've been to ecuador twice before when i was younger.

the best advice i can give you is don't drink the tap water.

other than that, its a beautiful country and the Andes mountains are amazing!

    Thank you!

I've heard about the coca leaves and coca tea...I'm actually looking forward to trying it!

Machu Picchu is sort of the centerpiece of our trip. We'll be doing a four-day hike on the Lares trail with the culmination being Machu Picchu. First time I've ever been in altitude that high, but other than that it should be an amazing experience!

    Thanks everyone for your feedback.
