One Day in Rhode Island

OK, so I am getting ready to head to New England for the Hartford and Mansfield shows this weekend. Wife and I are staying in Providence. No show on Sunday so we have a free day that day.

So, what to do with one free day in that area? I had considered going up to Boston. I've been there a couple of times but there is plenty I haven't seen.

Another thought was Martha's Vineyard. I don't know anything about it. The ferry seems pretty expensive but someone told me you could ride it as a passenger without a car and then rent scooters on the island to get around. Sounds kind of fun.

So, suggestions?

Thanks!

Oh, weather.com is calling for a 60% chance of rain that day.

You'll have plenty to do. If you go to MV you can take the ferry over and rent scooters for the day. If you don't feel like doing that you can take a trip to the Cape if you feel like it, Hyannis is very nice. If you like Italian food you can go up to Federal Hill in Providence and get some good stuff up there. Providence is actually a nice city as well.

Edit: I forgot to mention Newport, R.I. as well. Newport is right on the water and had a ton of shit to do. Bars, restaurants, all the mansions. It's very nice. It's also closer than any of the other options you might be thinking of.

Thanks. I did some looking and I may check out the Cliff Walk and tour a couple of those mansions. They look incredible online!

Sadly, I saw this thread this morning and didn't respond to it. I just mowed my lawn and thought about it for an hour and a half!

    that said...:D

Prov has great bars/restaurants...I recommend Fed Hill if you want good Italian...ask around for people's favorites...if you want seafood (albiet a bit pricey, but awesome) go to Heminways. They have a raw bar area, or a restaurant section as well.

Newport...great town...you've got the basics (Cliff walks, beaches)...good bars....and on a weekend, it will be hoppin' if it's a nice day. directions and parking are always an issue, but it's worth it if you're up for an adventure.
I love to turn you on

We get in Thursday afternoon. Italian sounds good for that night so we'll go check out Federal Hill. Always starving after a plane ride!

    Thanks for the suggestions!

They're even better in person. Newport is a great town and so is Providence.

Forget Martha's Vineyard. Go to Block Island. It's way better than the Vineyard- smaller, better (and less crowded) beaches. You can rent scooters there too, or bikes. It's a way cheaper experience too.

Newport is a great town.. Cliff walk, tour some of the mansions etc... grab some seafood.

If you enjoy Art, the RISD museum in Providence is a fantastic little museum.. you could head up to Thayer Street afterwards for lunch (Backyard of Brown and RISD campus).

I echo Block Island recommendations also if Newport is too crowded for you.

It's a shame the timing didn't work out better.. waterfire is the same night as the show (instead of in between the 2 shows). A Providence event everyone should see at least once (waterfire.org)

We are here! It is nice even though it is cloudy. Thanks for the suggestions. Tired from the flight but heading out to Atwells Ave to find Italian food. See everyone at the Hartford party tomorrow!!

OK, we just back from Constantino's on the Hill. So freaking stuffed. Hahaha. Great wine too. What a nice area. Dallas just doesn't have anything like that, except maybe Greenville Ave.

    See everyone in Hartford tomorrow!!

nothingman44 are you going to the Hartford and Boston shows?

Forgot that was the same weekend. You are right, a good time... though the only event that MIGHT have worse traffic than a Mansfield show : )
