Question for Parents

Need advice.

I have an 11 year old daughter. Real free spirit. Picked her own religion: quaker. She's a vegan. Verrrry liberal. Goes to an equally liberal school.

She wants to put blue streaks in her hair. I'm thinking I should let her. I never ventured into the Manic Panic zone, but plenty of my friends did.

What would you say? Keeping in mind my daughter has very white-white blonde hair (natural) so the streaks would REALLY stick out.

As long it is in keeping with the school policy, I say go for it!

If this is the "worst" thing she wants to do to express herself at this point, count your blessings. :)
I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

Blue hair can't hurt anything. Let her express herself.

  • I dyed my hair with food coloring when I was in high school
It was a little messy but I knew it would wash out easily

I say let her do it. :D

I'm never as good as when you're there.........
  • I'd let her do it with that stuff that washes out easily.

I'm just not sure I get a quaker who wants to die her hair with a color that would stand out so much. But I guess she is 11, so maybe rational thinking doesn't apply lol.

Oh let her have fun with her hair. She might not like it after a few days once she see's other peoples reactions. lol

Yeah... rational thinking pretty much left on the last bus.
I'm going to let her do it. Her totally uptight grandparents will think I've lost my mind, but it won't be the first time. Or the last, probably.

Good for you. Seems like a smart kid. She will be fine.

Well, unless her school has rules against it (given that it's very liberal I doubt it would) I do not see any harm in it. Hair is fully replaceable :)

My 8 year old intermittently asked to get a mohawk, but he is easily distractable, so I have managed to avoid it so far :)
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

I say let her do it. It REALLY doesn't matter. Pick your battles. (I'm a mom of an 18 year old and 14 year old girl - hair color is the LEAST of issues)

Yeah, pick your battles for sure. I would let her do it as long as the school doesn't have a problem with it.

DEFINITELY. Besides, you never know when you'll need to play the old 'well I DID let you dye your hair so I must not be THAT evil' card...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

Just be sure she knows that coloring blonde hair is sometimes more permanent than one thinks it will be.

I think I was still playing with barbies at 11 years old...

I don't think it's a big deal, let her do it.

yeppers...even those that claim to wash out after just a few shampoos will permanetly stain blonde hair....

"ack, why can't i get this stuff out of my hair!"

but hey she might enjoy looking like a smurf until her hair grows out :)

This is a good thing to know. Even naturally blonde hair? (As opposed to mine which is bleached beyond recognition.)

she might want to try with kool-aid first, since she has blond hair already it will show up well and not be as vivid as manic panic or something like that.

also, my experience with manic panic is that when you shower or wash your hair, there is a ton of dye washing out for weeks, everytime you have a shower. running down your body, splattering on the walls, pooling in the tub. might want to keep that in mind if you have a white bathroom. it stains shower curtains, towels and bathmats. maybe your grout.

(as negative as this sounds, I vote for letting her dye it though.)
  • let her she is not doin anything wrong so let her...
