Has anyone ever sold old gold jewelry?

I have a bunch of old jewelry that I no longer want for various reasons, and I keep seeing commercials and signs up at jewelry stores offering to buy scrap gold. (Whoa, a commercial came on just as I typed this...weird.)

Anyway, is it worth the trouble? Is it easy to get ripped off this way, and would it be smarter to try to unload it on ebay or something? Is there a good place to send it off, or should I just walk into a random jewelry store with it?

I have no experience in this kind of thing, but I would think the TV ad one is probably a rip-off.

Maybe start asking around at a couple different jewelry stores? My guess would be you'd get the most money selling it yourself, but there might be a place in town that buys it, or heck even lets you sell it on consignment.
  • i hear commercials for this place every friggin' night on the radio when i'm going home. here's the website: http://cash4gold.com/

Yeah that thing seems like a scam.
  • I'll be taking mine to local jeweler... Not really up for getting ripped off.

it must be scamming people left and right and completely getting away with it every time because i've heard it on the radio for at least 2-3 years, every weeknight. and if memory serves me correctly, howard stern plugs them a lot. not saying howard is an authority on legit companies, but i had sirius for at least a year and a half and heard him plug it every day.

  • I have heard (via random internet searches) that the cash4gold thing is a scam. I think I'll check out one of the local jewelry stores. Hell, they have had signs up at Boscov's offering to buy gold recently.

I wonder if the offers would widely vary from place to place. I have no idea what to expect them to offer. It's not a ton of gold, but it's enough that I'd rather turn it into a little cash than have it taking up space in my jewelry drawer.

I guess I could always shop around.

    I'm rambling... :D

i must be hearing something else on the radio, then. i can't believe it would be allowed to advertise if it wasn't legit, you know? and for as long as i've been hearing the commercial. but whatever. no skin off my sac if you don't want to use them ;)

lol, No I see their commercials all the time and apparently they are considered "good" by the better business bureau....but then I read that that means basically nothing. I don't know, lol. It just seems shady putting my old jewelry into a little envelope and mailing it off. :D

I sold an old 14K gold chain and 14K dog tag with my name on it...remember when they were cool to wear :p

I went to a local jeweler and they gave to $200 for it

If you have any 18K gold that is selling much higher

  • I found a gold link bracelet outside a movie theatre in California about 10 years ago while on vacation. I got married last year and we needed extra $ so I put it up on the bay and got $600 for it! It was 35 grams of 18K.

Take it in to a real gold dealer local to you. Be face to face with the person buying it. Ask what their cut is. Never, never send your gold jewelry off in the mail to an unknown place.
