    is it a defensive mechanism? pessimism? self-fulfilling? stupid? all the above? lol

    i do it sometimes. but i wonder if it does me any good really. i'm not pessimistic by nature overall, just for certain things, my brain tends to go in the darkest scenario.

    just curious on people's take on it.

    I try to be optimistic most of the time but there ARE appropriate times to consider the worst possible outcome.

    For example, when thinking about issues that are related to your survival--it is appropriate to look at the best and the worst outcome so that you can consider whether an action is worst the risk.

    I believe it's in us as a kind of protection.

    However, most of the time (considering most actions don't involve life or death situations) I think it's better to stay on the optimistic side.
