My husband goes here every day... Happened in an area he is very familiar with. He stayed home today. Overslept.

Jesus... What is wrong with people? People died... :( Sometimes I don't even know what to make of this world we live in....

DeKALB - Several people have been shot at Northern Illinois University, according to information heard Thursday afternoon over a police scanner and from eyewitness reports.

Reports have said the shooter is down. Northern Illinois University police say a gunman who opened fire inside a lecture hall, injuring several people, is “no longer a threat” and “the immediate danger has passed,” according to The Associated Press.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb said they were treating at least 13 people from the shooting, with three to four having head wounds. Students are praying and many are on cell phones or crying. Phone lines in DeKalb reportedly were jammed by 4 p.m.

Shortly before 3 p.m., one shooter went into Northern Illinois University's Cole Hall auditorium armed with a shotgun and opened fire at random, according to witnesses at the scene. There reportedly were as many as five possible victims.

Around the same time, calls started coming over a police scanner about a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.

As of 3:45 p.m., two shooting victims were being tended to at nearby Neptune Hall, a student residence hall. Shortly before 4 p.m., another victim was pulled out of Cole Hall, according to eyewitness reports. The northern door to Cole Hall was smashed, according to eyewitness reports.

Police have established a perimeter around Cole Hall, and 15-20 emergency vehicles were in the area.

A Daily Chronicle photographer on the scene reported five people have going by on stretchers. Blood was apparent and obvious, the photographer said.

At least two people are reported down in DuSable Hall, and one person was shot in the head, according to eyewitness reports. It could not be confirmed if it was from a gunshot.

Emergency services personnel have been called in from throughout DeKalb and Kane counties to help with the situation.

A university spokeswoman said at 3:10 p.m. she had just heard about the shooting and could not immediately comment on the situation.

At 3:20 p.m., the university posted a campus alert on its Web site.

“There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus,” the alert read. “Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity.”

Shortly afterward, they posted an announcement that classes were canceled for Thursday night. Authorities reportedly secured the scene as of 3:25 p.m.

What the fuck could be so horrible that someone has to open fire like this? On people... living their own lives... Minding their own business...

Is this asshole trying to make a statement on Valentine's Day? Some Al Capone thing? Are they pissed about a breakup? Are they mad that they can't get a girlfriend? What the fuck is wrong with people?

It just makes me so upset... This can happen anywhere and even when we begin to feel our safest in such a small town, we can't help but KNOW that this shit will happen anytime, anywhere. I know my husband didn't go to class today, but what would have happened if he did? What would have changed? I hate knowing he could be in danger and I hate thinking about the bigger picture knowing these things can happen at any time whether we're ready or not.

I feel so much for those victims. I even feel for the asshole who pulled the trigger... The fact that he couldn't get his head straight obviously. This just sucks.

There are news reporters, helicopters, and police everywhere. This doesn't feel like home anymore.

Probably some idiot who thinks it's profound to kill people on the day of love.

The sad thing is I saw this and thought "oh well...". Kinda sad that these things are happening so often, and are undoubtedly inspiring other kids to do the same.

Yeah, just a few weeks earlier during finals someone posted this threat in one of the dorms about a school shooting. No one even really acknowledged it. It was passed off as someone just not wanting to take the finals. Typical story...

And then this happens and shocks everyone here, but no one outside of this little town. I don't know man... The world is changing.
  • I think some people are brainwashed by popular culture. There's always been abuse behind closed doors and people grow up angry but not all get a weapon and kill someone.

I still think kids need a spell in the army these days. :D Of course, history has taught us that, that doesn't always work but for the majority, it puts their priorities into perspective.

Yeah, that's what we need, for these people to have sharpshooting skills ;)

but seriously, the army wouldn't help. Fucked up people end up worse in the military. They don't need army brainwashing, they need a country that doesn't treat gun ownership as a right. It needs to be a priviledge if it's legal at all.

It takes just one seriously fucked up person in a million to cause this kind of mayhem. It worries the hell out of me what kind of world my kids are going to live in. :(

Yep, we all get dragged into this rat race... play your part in society, don't look at strangers, don't open up! Society can often be quite cold and I feel things like this are a result.

    I'm sorry cateeto :(

I'm glad he's ok. Be strong. The NIU family of students, faculty, administration, and alumni has been strong and will only be stronger.

This building with large lecture halls that frequently serves Gen Ed classes has been a classroom for most if not nearly all NIU students. I know I've taken a handful of classes in there, and it's really creepy to hear the students describe the situation and be able to picture the room perfectly because you've spent so many hours in there.

I heard a girl from Virginia Tech on the radio this morning reaching out with support and advice. She said that most of the student body out there was wearing red and black today in support. It's amazing the waves of support that have been coming in.

God bless and good luck to the NIU Family.
