I've been dual booting XP and ubuntu on my laptop for awhile now and my main computer has just ubuntu. I reallly like it but be warned that parting from windows means parting from a lot of software that you may be dependent on. You could do one of three things to get started with ubuntu to try it before you make a commitment. The first is get a live cd and just boot off the live cd to test it out. The second is the new version of Ubuntu has an option to install ubuntu like you would a program right into your windows partition. Just insert the CD in windows and it will do the rest. The third option is to make 2 partitions on your hard drive and install ubuntu on one of them and keep windows on the other and just dual boot it. Hope that helps!
