the last time I movie wowed me was the departed so looking forward to this. Kinda reminds me of a gritty 70's type movie.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

  • I saw it and it was good, worth seeing for sure, but not balls out great. Denzel, who I love and can really do no wrong, did not set himself apart in this. I can't really explain it, but he just didn't make his character pop.

Not to compare it to Training Day, but in that flick, he showed a new dimension not yet flushed out. IMO. Just IMO.

It was really well written and directed and shot. You really feel like you are in the 70's. Josh Brolin rocked.

So now I am just looking so forward to 'No Country for Old Men.' Read it before you see it! Cormac is the truth.

  • I re-watched 'The Departed' last night, after seeing AG that afternoon. IMO again, 'The Departed' is just on a different, higher level. That's what prompted me to even post on this topic.

I saw it properly today in the cinema--with better company than last week and no distractions--plus the theatre experience. It did ROCK! :D I'm so glad I saw it today! :D

By looking at the previews it reminds of a mixture of Heat, Training Day, Serpico and various other 70's gritty ganster/crime movies.

Let me start by saying i liked the movie and it is worth seeing in the theatre. I really enjoyed Denzel & Crowe. Denzel is just awesome in all he does and he nails this part!

I liked the story i think that what will hold this film back at least to me is the directing. Not that it was bad mind you just that it was not great. For me gangster movies always get compared to Scrossse films and Coppla films. Those directors bring not only a fluid vision but ad a little extra art and commentary in the way the film is shot.

I did not feel like this movie had much of that extra touch those directors are so good at.

So i thought it was a great film and i really do recomend it but some people are going to want to classify it as one of the best gangster movies ever and I won't agree with that.

I did enjoy it a lot though :D and Denzel is the man!

I liked Crowe's character more, as well as the performance..

I NEVER like Russell Crowe... ever! But I thought he was fucking excellent in this. The stand out scene for me was the two of them in the interview room at the end... there was an untold mutual respect, understanding and yet a kinda disgust (not being the right word but I can't think of it right now :o ) for eachother. The acting was fantastic. They definitely out heat'ed Pacino and DeNiro :)
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable

    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

I agree, both terrific in this movie...Years ago, I too hated Crowe but then realized what an asshole I was, and what a great actor he is..'A Beautiful Mind,' and 'Cinderella Man,' are my personal favs..

:D well for me, it's not his acting skills... I just don't like HIM in films... I think it's something to do with southern hemisphere actors doing American accents... it often comes out quite low and nasal and just irritating... same reason I can't stand Nicole Kidman. I know it's irrational but I've just never liked either of them.

sure. but they were both damn good. i simply think crowe's character had *more* to it, thus a better performance for it. i LOVED all the *contrasts* in the film.....remember the thanksgiving scene? sooooo well done, so one never forgets what it truly is ALL about.

btw - the scenes with armand assante in/outside his home? that is on long island...not even 5 miles from where i live. a spectacular place that has been utilized for many, many films, print ads, commercials, etc...and one of my personal fave places to photograph. just a little fyi for y'all. ;)
