Anyone ever go away to summer camp as a kid? I went about 4 times.
Best time EVER!! I never wanted to go home when the week was over.
My son is away at camp right now and I can just imagine how much fun he is having. He is almost 13 years old and he's at a Junior High Camp. I'm sure he's fallen in love a few times by now :) Aaahhh.........to be young again :D

  • I used to go for a week or two with my brothers when I was younger... I swear my parents only did to make sure they had some peace
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Ahh great thread .. We just spent the last two weekends sleepaway camp hunting for my son. Going to all these camps brought back such great memories! It is a 7 week camp and I think I am going to be more sick than he is!

As a note, I think we picked the camp for him because they had a fire going and the smell brought back good times. It is amazing how senses can play a part. (Just kidding, the camp is amazing and I wish I was going).

Ha! Hooray for your son. I'm glad he went. I never did go other than my week in 6th grade for Outdoor ed and it was a great time. But yeah, I always had sports, so I never had time to take off and go to camp. :(

Never went to a real summer camp. I don't think it was very popular around where/when I grew up- I don't remember any of my friends really going either. I did go to sports camps- day camps. Soccer was brutal. went from like 7am to 5pm, always seemed to be the hottest week of the year, just running and running.

I'm also scared of goats.... and sea otters... and sometimes flying squirrels.
  • Ironically, I love camping NOW but summer camp as a kid? Forget it. I hated it.
Mostly I hated being woken up at the ass-crack of dawn and being thrown in the freezing cold lake first thing in the morning for swimming lessons, and then taking the rest of the damn day to thaw out.
I also missed my mom. I was a baby like that.

I went to a place called Clear Creek in 6th grade for outdoor education. I remember the cool nature hikes at night. I also got to hold a huge snake!

I also went to Camp Ramah for a weekend in Ojai. All I remember is the long sabbath services, and the yummy chicken they served afterwards!

Went to my first summer camp when I was 8. A little early, I was the youngest kid and an easy target for all kind of "jokes". Loved it all the same; when I got home I boasted about having had two boyfriends!

    Lenny from The Simpsons understands...

Lenny: Assault weapons have gotten a lot of bad press lately, but they’re manufactured for a reason: to take out today’s modern super animals, such as the flying squirrel, and the electric eel.

I spent most of my summer's in the wooded areas of suburban Chicago singing kuumbaya, peace songs and other favorite 60's and 70's folky tunes..... A Hippie's dream! Shit if we didnt do that for an hour we were making "God's Eyes" out of yarn and sticks, tye dying t-shirts or doing leaf rubbings with old crayons... OMg what did my parents do to me? Kidding!

I never got to go as a camper, but I did work at a summer camp for 3 summers.

The first year I was a counselor for 5th grader girls
The second year I was a counselor for kindergarten boys
and the third year I was a certified lifeguard and swimming instructor for the entire came ages 3-12..

It was SO awesome. I LOVED working at a camp.

Did you always sing the correct lyrics?

I always thought the cantor at my temple was just moaning when he forgot the words.

I am what is politely called a "camp cultist" I started going to the same camp when I was 8...haven't really quit yet except now I'm an adult director (hard to think of me as adult supervision for anything). My daughter started going to the same camp when she was 8. She's 19 now and hasn't quit either.

Most of the people who are dearest to me are camp friends that I've had since childhood...and when I have had really horrible things happen in my life, I turn to them...and drive out to the camp and sit to watch the waterfalls and regain some peace.

There's a great book that came out this summer called Camp Camp...Where Lord of the Flies Meets Fantasy Island. For any of you who loved those summer days, it's a great read!
