Floating Checks

I have to write a check to the DMV (California) this evening. My car registration is due tomorrow but I don't get paid till Friday. I know it's bad planning on my part but shit happens. Any idea how long it takes for a check to the DMV to hit the bank?

    These days it can take as little as one day to clear. Many places simply take the routing number and account number to get faster payment. Are you going to pay it in person or mail it in or pay it online? Paying online would almost guarantee the DMV will use the routing method. In person with a check could take as much as a week. If it was me, I would probably pay in person with a check on Wednesday and hope for the best.

    Good Point.
    The late fee is only $11 as opposed to all the fee's for bouncing a check.

    Mine does...you can borrow it if you ever need it.

    And yeah, the plan to wait til Friday and just pay the DMV's increase is a safer bet than letting the bank get you.
