I'm guessing you saw JUNO, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and THERE WILL BE BLOOD? What was your favorite?

guessing? you're not certain from my post? ;)

it's a tough call really. i like no country, but was a bit disappointed. i think i preferred the book. it was still excellent though.

juno was a riot and the most enjoyable viewing. i might say that was my fav, though i think there will be blood is the best. it is truly an epic movie. it didnt feel as long as it's 2.5 hour running time, even though it's a pretty slow movie. and some stellar acting. but i'd probly lean to juno. it's just got such a great cast and was funny in ways most other sex comedies lately haven't been.

for what it's worth, in a voting pool i picked atonement to win, becos the academy is made up of a bunch of lame-as-shit teary-eyed hypocritical boomers who think world war 2 is the best thing that ever happened in the history of the world.

You picked one that you didn't see...........but I do totally understand your logic. I think I'm most excited to see JUNO. It's gonna be a long day......

I applaud you, but I have a hard time watching two movies in a row. I really wanted to do a Lord of the Rings marathon, but I can't stay in one place that long.

Good luck! I hear most of those movies are really good.

It helped secure your right to freedom. Good people died fighting it. It's pretty important to me. What's wrong with a little history?

don't give me that freedom bullshit i've heard it before and im not going to start sucking my grandpa's dick over doing what they were supposed to do. it's not the greatest generation, it's the most over-rated generation. we went over and distracted hitler long enough for russia to kick the living shit out of him and we act like god's gift to the world. it's the go-to for misty-eyed mindless nationalists who want to feel good about themselves. why? becos for once, we were fighting the good fight. and it gave us such an over-inflated sense of self-importance that we've been fighting the unnecessary fight ever since. and they know it. so rather than deal with reality, they throw on another chest thumping melodramatic world war 2 piece of shit and get choked up about how great we all were and get fired up for more heroic killing in the name of our great nation. the problem isn't the war itself, the problem is the glorification of the violence and the fact that people cling to that one war as proof that we are forever the good guys and god's chosen nation and use it as a justification for every abuse we've inflicted on other people since.

if we'd stayed out and hitler had won, we'd have cut a deal with him in no time to make billions with the nazis and we'd still be free.

good people died on the german and russian side too, but they dont matter much, do they?

it's not history, it's a movie based on a fictional book and it's been done 9 million times before.

It looks like you want to pick a fight which im not going to do with a guy with 30,000+ posts. I just don't have the time.
We'll agree to disagree, and i just hope You can get around to appreciate what a vet has done for you. Politics suck, we know that, but these guys that died had no part in it and they get shit on more and more each day.
I see what your saying about the rationale behind the attack and lets face it pretty much every war is bullshit, But i feel for the people who fight it and i don't mind watching a movie about it.

im not trying to pick a fight, im just bored with watching movies about it. ive seen enough. i get the point: nazis are bad and americans kicked some nazi ass. everyone was better off. i'm not shitting on the soldiers. i'm shitting on the people exploiting the soldiers and glorifying the violence and trauma they suffered for cheap sentiment and profit. that's all. it was a war. it was ugly and brutal and had to be done. but it was not a high point in world history and shouldn't be treated as such. to glorify what happened as the highest point in our country's history only encourages more bloodshed and diminishes everything they fought for. it was supposed to be a war to end all wars, not a war that justified arrogance and more war.

After thinking about it you're probably right. There are a shitload of these movies floating around. I just watched braveheart so my freeeedooom! is at an all-time high which explains my patriotic vibe.

You know, Braveheart is dire when you think about it. It is very entertaining and really works you up and makes you patriotic, especially if you are scottish. It's just that it's so full of shit that it's creating a strong sentiment based on hollywood indulgence and money harvesting rather than history. It's like Mel Gibson never even read up on the subject :o

I'm a little leary about sitting in the theatre that long (it's about 12 hours I think) but it was a $30 ticket which includes bottomless popcorn and drink and break time between movies. I should be ok........and I really really wanna see all these movies :D

i thought about doing this but that's too much time in a theater seat....if i could bring my sofa, well that's another story....;)

    have fun!!! :D
  • I agree, but i'm a sucker for a good speech. Plus i just really like the movie, i don't profess to be an expert on scottish history.

I hope i'm not derailing your thread Pixie. Good luck with the marathon. I'm pulling for Daniel Day Lewis tommorow.

that's all it is for me. there's a drive by trucker song about a vet who tells his grandson he never saw john wayne on the sands of iwo jima. kind of an attempt to explode the myth about world war 2, which just seems to get pretty unrealistic treatment in film. i think 'pearl harbor' was the nail in the coffin for me. quite possibly the worst movie i have ever seen.

i've never seen braveheart though. cant stand mel gibson ;)

Don't get me wrong, I used to love the film. It's just funny how many people (and I don't mean you) seem to take the film as some sort of historical statement. There's so many factual errors in it that it's not even funny.

this on the other hand, is very funny :D Even more so when you realise he says this is Glasgow.

But yeah, Daniel Day-Lewis all the way. I have yet to see There Will Be Blood but I know damn well he's the best actor around and IMDB already has that film ranked about 14th ever or something insane like that.

This is what I thought of the movies:
    1. Juno
    2. No Country for Old Men
    3. Atonement
    4. Michael Clayton
    5. There will be blood.

Long day, I ate a barrel of popcorn and drank an ocean of diet coke!
I'm glad I went. It was a neat thing. They did trivia between movies and gave out prizes. I'd do it again next year. Totally worth it.

.........and Daniel Day Lewis creeps me out as well as the bad guy dude in No Country for Old Men. I'm gonna have nightmares about them.

  • this is the first year in AGES that i have actually seen all 5 oscar nominated films. we are BIG movie buffs, but there's usually at least one we manage to skip. it *almost* was there will be blood this year, but we recently saw it. i give it the edge for winning this year, not because it was my favorite...but simply b/c of daniel day-lewis...and the overall style/themes of the film. i do NOT understand why atonement got nominated, at all. it was mediocre at best, and i LOVE period dramas, really like knightley and mcavoy, but nonetheless....undeserving imho. i would LOVE to see juno win, simply b/c comedies get short shrift for best film year after year, and it IS fantastic! michael clayton was goooddd....tilda swinton fantastic in it, but i just don't think it has the chops to compete. so i really think it'll come down to there will be blood and no country for old men...which was also fantastic, and i probably 'liked' more than blood, but both stellar.

hope you're enjoying your movie marathon - i think i'd like that! and $30 for all 5...what a steal! :D sounds cool! and bottomless popcorn?! yikes....dangerous!

oops...thought it was for today, not yesterday! glad you enjoyed!
and the bad guy in no country...javier bardem, fantastic! usually he is so hot/sexy in films, too bizarre/cool to see him as such a creepy psycho!
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

  • i just realized i've only seen 1 movie from the 5 nominated :o whoops lol was 'michael clayton' which i enjoyed

movie marathons are fun, the most crazy one i did was hte LOTR trilogy when the 3rd one came out. ayyy my bootie haha
