Going to the Big Island in Jan. 09. What should I do?

I'm escaping the darkness and cold of Alaska for the month of January 09. I have a rental car and will be camping most of the time. My wife and 4 year old son will also be along for the ride. What is some cool stuff to do or see. Cheap and kid friendly a must. We are really interested in secluded beaches. Thanks for any suggestions.
Yes, there really is a dog.

One of my best friends moved out there about 6 months ago. He lives in Hilo right now, but bought 3 acres of land in the southeast Puna district in which he plans to build a place and live off the land as much as possible. I'll talk to him and find out where some good places are. I know there's a cool black sand beach around there that he sent me pictures of... there were a lot of big sea turtles hanging out on the beach.

I do know that most of the touristy stuff is on the west side of the island.. with the exception of the volcano of course.
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

If you want to see the black sand beach, you will need to rent a jeep. It is on the south end of the island and there is a pretty steep descent to get down to it.

I would recommend going snorkeling every day. There is a great place about 30 minutes south of Kona. Also, go to Mauna Kea observatory. It is at almost 14,000 feet so it will be a little tough to breath up there. Another great place to visit is Volcanoes National Park on the south end of the island. Hopefully the flow will be moving.

The surfing is so-so around the island, but there are a few places you can rent a board from.

Or if you are lazy you can just go do meth with the locals for a week.

are you strictly staying on the big island?

i don't recall it being that great for camping as it's fairly barren with the volcanoes ... for sure goto the observatory ontop of mauna kea; watch the lava flow at nite in Volcano Nat'l Park (make sure you bring a flash light as the walk back is tricky at night) ...

i would suggest jumping over to kauai as well as that's my favourite island ... lots of hiking options there ... especially up at the napali coast ...

    enjoy
