GPA Question

It's 1:00 AM and nobody is around to answer my question :(

Except you guys :)

This is for anyone who knows.

If I take a class twice (in college), then the grade points for the two semesters are averaged together right? For example, if I make an A and a C, GPA-wise it's like I made a B, correct?

In other words, it's not like I made both an A AND a C? In other words, if it's a 3 credit hour class, I still only get 3 hours worth of credit, not 6?

Okay. I'll give you my exact situation.

I made an F in a class last semester (stupid, I know.)
I retook it this semester, and am going to fail it again (stupider, I know)

So what happens is the two Fs are averaged together right? And not counted as two separate grades? (Although they will both appear on my transcript

Thanks.

I would look up the grading policy on your school's website to be sure, but from my experience the higher of the two grades will count towards your GPA, but both will still be shown on your transcript

I think it depends on your school.

I'm pretty sure that retaking a class means that you are getting one grade for that class. At my undergrad school, if you retook a class, it was like you said, you got the average of the two grades once you retook it. So and A (4) plus and F (0) would be 4/2 = a 2 for that class. Which is technically lower then a C. A C was a 2.67.

I would look up the guidelines at your school, it should be posted online.
  • I know for a fact the higher of the two isn't taken, and that the absolute best is that they're averaged together. :(

I looked on the school's website, and it doesn't say anything (explicitly) about my particular situation. It doesn't adress the subtle difference between, say, 1 B vs. 1 A and 1 C.

But is it unusual for BOTH to count, as if they were two separate classes?

    here you go my dear:

    1. General regulation

1.1. Students who repeat a course, regardless if the grade previously made, will have both grades counted in their cumulative grade point average.

    from your school's website. :(

that sucks...you should have dropped those classes before getting an F. I think I did that once in mid-semester when I knew for sure I wasn't gonna make my grades up.
