I very rarely use a hairdryer, I even try to avoid it if i'm straightening. I have uber thick, nearly waist length, wavey/loose curly hair and it takes forever. But! When I do use it, I make sure I take advantage of the 'cool shot' function. It reduces the temperature drastically so the heat is broken up and a more natural air temperature. Plus, I load it up with protective products to try and reduce as much damage as possible... it still feels frazzled by the end of it though.
I've abused my hair for years with dryers, straighteners, curling tongs, bleach, brushing and dye, and now I just love letting it dry naturally. I don't even dye it anymore. It drys soft and defined and slowly the condition is getting better. I've even stopped brushing it unless i'm about to wash it - and I never brush it while it's wet!
I've realised that my hair is naturally voluminous, curly and beautiful, so as a result, I probably now straighten it about three times a year... To think, I used to do it every week
i haven't owned a haribrush since i was a little girl. i always used a pick and a wide tooth comb in the shower. that was it. i bought my first hairbrush in probably 20 years when i got my hair straightened. when curly, i too never blowdry, always airdry....never brush......only wide tooth comb in the shower to remove knots, and used a pick when semi-dry simply to style. basically, when dry, my fingers were the only tools i ever used in my hair. now even when straight, i always airdry. course i do brush and comb now wet or dry. although i do blowdry my bangs b/c they are reverting back...but not every day. you really do have to work with your hair as best you csan to keep it HEALTHY! healthy hair is always the best hair, curly, straight and everything inbetween...
i have thick, curly hair naturally and i have never personally straightened my hair. i've had it done in the salon a couple times when getting a haircut, but cannot imagine being bothered doing so at home. that said, i pretty much always just let my hair air-dry and pull a pick thru it, aplly a small amount of product, and i'm good to go. however, back at the end of may i decided to go for the japanese straightening and i LOVE it. my hair was completely stick straight and uber shiny!
I LOVE your straight hair! It looks amazing. Do you find that you have to blow your roots straight as they grow in?
I have thick curly hair and have never had the patience to blow it out myself. The one time I tried I managed to get the brush stuck in my hair. I get my hair blow straight maybe once a year at a salon.

5 months in and NOPE!
as i siad, my only *issue* is my bangs. b/c i chose to get bangs and my hair grows fast...i've had my bangs trimmed 3x already. they are not curly, but they sure as shit ain't striaght. so i do have to blow them out straight if i want them to be, but if they get wait....they get funky kinks. it takes all of 3 minutes to blow em out, but i am thinking of either growing them out...then a non-issue...or enjoying them longer by getting JUST my bangs straightened again, if that's even possible...i don't know if they'll only do a section, qnd yea, i don't want to pay a lot for it either. i figure if i can get another 5 months from em, see how it all goes.
i am really enjoying my straight hair. i may keep it awhile. it wasn't too pricey and if i can get away with straightening it say once a year, i may do so for awhile. as long as it stays healthy and shiny.
the day i have to blow dry my hair is the day i let it go back to it's natural state....or go get it straightened again.
I straighten mine sometimes and I have a Chi. It is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have long, curly, thick, hair and i can straighten it in about 20 minutes if my hair is dry. I have gotten pretty fast over the years and learned a few shortcuts. It you get a straightener, a Chi is probably the best way to go but they are a bit pricey. If you go for another brand make sure its ceramic. It's not as bad for your hair. Also, when you straighten it, make sure you put something in your hair for hold. That will help protect it and keep it straight for the entire day. Just don't use it everyday or even every other day. It will fry your hair.
Have to agree - I also have a Chi iron and it ROCKS. Worth the $$

i bought a 200 dollar straightner about a year and a half ago and i love it.
i spent so much because i have really wavy hair.... and other ones didnt seem to work that well.
yet lately i dont straighten much because i've noticed my hair is coming out a lot now hwich is scary (i'm only 20!) and i think it may be because of the weight and the length of my hair... so i don't like to straighten it too often so it doesnt give it a lot of stress....
i want my hair to be calm and have inner peace maybe!
got the CHI process done on my hair 2 years ago , I love it. I just blow dry my hair in 5 minutes & it is completely straight. Even if I air dry, no frizz. Was costly - $400, but I used to go to a salon any time I was going somewhere special & they charge $40+ just to wash & straighten it. And I have no time in the morning to use a straightener.
They said it would last 6-8 months, but it actually lasted for me for over a year before I needed it again.
Doesn't damage hair either.

Thanks for all of the replies! I went out and got an iron, a Remington w/ oils infused in the ceramic discs. Was thinking about a Chi, but figured I try the iron out before I "invested" in a Chi. OMG, I love it! My hair looks ahhhh-mazing! It feels a little thin, but I know it's not. It sits just right. And truly shines. So thanks!

I own a straightner. I only started using it when I cut my hair short as thats when the slight kinks appeared. I very rarely use it though, and now that my hair is a li'l longer, I can curl it using the straightner now I use Aussie hair products which have improved the condition of my hair after years of bleaching and dying it pink Now I have pretty nice pink hair
My hair isn't really curly, more wavy. I can get away with just using one of those metal core brushes to straighten it. Once in a while I use a flat iron to get it really sleek but i don't like using it a lot as my hair is on the fine side.

usually i have to blow out my hair, pulling out the waves as i go and then iron it straighter and flatter. it takes almost an hour and its a pain in the ass. ANd i never know how it will come out.
i had the brazilian straightening the other day. it supposedly a conditioning straightener. when i went to dry it, all i had to do was run my fingers through it while i had the hair dryer on it and then follow up quickly with the flat iron to get the few (looser) waves out. its softer and shinier now too. about 15 minutes instead.

That's the straightener I have. It works pretty well - but I like it cause it does keep my hair shiny. I was thinking of getting my hair chemically straightened, but I've been wearing it curly on occasion lately, so I might wait on that.
