I own an 80 GB IPOD, with over 13,000 songs on it so far. I'm thinking of getting an iphone down the line (maybe an 8gb one for $199). How will I be able to sync the iphone with only 2,000 songs, and still be able to use the 80 gb ipod?

your computer will see "recognize" your iPod and your iPhone. You may choose different settings for each iPod you plug on your computer.
So, you don't have to change anything for your 80G iPod.
But you can't sync your iPhone... well, you can do it, but if you only have 8 or 16 G, iTunes will make a random selection to fill the iPhone. Just select "manual" and drop the songs/albums you want on your iPhone
