Houston, we have a problem

I heard on the news that there's a problem with the changing of urine into drinking water on the shuttle. Is anyone else grossed out at the thought of that, recycling urine? It's not working the way it should be. The only article online I could find was this but it's a few weeks old:

    it tastes like iodine. this is what I heard on the news, that the shuttle needs a plumber....

    did you know that people drink urine b/c it is full of melatonin (for insomniacs.)

    I'd rather get my melatonin in a pill.

    soooo, I wonder if the melatonin is one of the reasons or it saves on waste.
    I didn't read that article completely.

    The purpose is , I believe , twofold. 1 saves on tranporting fresh potable water to space and since everything is going "Green" it's a damn good way to recycle.

    Urine is sterile to begin with , so if the tanks start clean , then there shouldn't be an issue with contamination.


    Military pilots are trained during survival training to drinkl there own urine if there is no fresh water source available if they are shot down.Aids in preventing dehydration which can lead to confused state of mind. A pilot behind enemy lines needs to keep his wits about him!




    Now if they could only find a way to recycle SH@#! We wouldn't see as many "shooting stars"
