I'm not offended by this thread about white people and their need to follow rules. But I'm curious if anybody would be offended if I started a thread that implied that black people drink sprite and like their steak well done?
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I've never understood this 'it's alright to make fun of white people but not black people' bullshit either... either be non prejudicial in your prejudice... or be non prejudicial :) I go with the former :)

    Stuff White People Like
    #50 Irony
    February 3, 2008 by clander

White people hate a lot of stuff (white people who vote republican, television, Vin Diesel movies, SUVs, fast food) but every once in a while they turn that hate into sweet irony.

Often times, white people will make a joke about how hard it is to define irony. It’s not that funny, and back in the 1990s people got all upset at Alanis Morrisette for using the term improperly in her song “Isn’t it Ironic?”

But the reason that white people love irony is that it lets them have some fun and feel better about themselves.

The most horrific recent example is Trucker hats, that shockingly went from mainstream in the 80s to Ironic in the early 2000s back to mainstream, at which point they are no longer rare or unique. Once something reaches this stage, irony cannot be restored for 10 years.

Other examples would include white people getting together to have a ‘white trash’ night where they would eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, drink Bud Light and watch Larry the Cable Guy or The Marine. Maybe listen to Kid Rock or P.O.D. These events allow white people to experience things they are supposed to hate, all while feeling better about their own lives, decisions, and cultured tastes.

Occassionally, white people will put an ironic knick knack in their home or apartment such as a “Support our Troops” magnet or a bottle of Mickey’s.

This can be used to your advantage. If you need to appear cool to white people, you just need to pick something that was popular 10+ years ago and put it in a prominent place at your desk or in your home. A C+C Music Factory Cassette, or a “2 Legit 2 Quit” t-shirt would both be acceptable examples.

Also, you might find yourself in conversation where you mention that you like something and there is an awkward silence indicating that it is not cool. In this situation, uou must say “oh yeah, I also like [insert similar things]” and smile, the white people will laugh and all will be well.

I agree. I could care less what color your skin is, if you're uptight about grammar on a message board, it's because you have OCD or you have low self-esteem. If you eat your steak well done, you have no taste...

I would take it a step further and see if people would get up in arms about me posting a thread that stated that only black people love fried chicken, watermelon and being in gangs

I used Orwell's Politics and the English Language on an essay about idealism in Federico Garcia Lorca's work a few months back. I can't remember anything about it though. What do you need help in understanding?

Listen, no one is advocating that people should post like they have been sniffing glue and/or paint. However, it is a rock band's message board, not a "Post your thesis about your hatred for corporations and your love for non-profits and grocery co-ops!" forum.

Generally, we're talking about rock and roll and the lifestyles of folks who like it.

Therefore, pointing out sporadic incorrect expressions of its/it's/its' there/their, verb tense, and the placement of quotation marks, etc, is ridiculous.

    agreed.

i HAVE complained about their/they're, your/you're, etc....but only in threads that were specifically about such issues and/or pet peeve threads, etc. i completely dislike in the midst of a thread about whatever topic...someone going off on their grammar/spelling. yesterday i was reading a thread and in the midst of it someone was 'correcting' the OP's posts, saying 'oh there's no apostrophe in that word'...blah, blah, blah. i just thought, wtf? you got the point, it's got nothing to do with the thread. yikes. sure, sometimes i read things at times and cringe...or just wonder :p....hell, sometimes my own typos produce such effects. haha. however, unless it's done for 'effect'...for sarcasm within the context of the thread topic, yes, i see no point to it. this ain't no english class. ;) it would be one thing if someone ASKED for pointers/assistance...but otherwise, yes, please stfu. :)

    nice topic. ;)

I hate it when English speaking people put others down about their grammar. ESPECIALLY on msg boards
I know the basics of 6 languages and can speak 4 of them, of which three fluently. So who cares about some spelling mistakes, it is communication that matters!!
And on a msg board like this it is great to be able to meet people with all kinds of nationalities and backgrounds.
I actually believe that the level of English on this board may scare some people off.
I definitely wish I was able to express myself better in English on this board (even though I believe my English is already quite well).

I always ask people who do not appreciate me speaking their language to try and speak some Dutch...that shuts them up!

I dont mind writing in English, but please have some respect for people whose mothertongue isnt english!

    -rant finished-

    :)

    edit: damn a typo...!

    agreed. :)

i find most of the non-native english speakers/writers to overall take more care and have better usage than many native speakers. so yea......hahaha. and when there IS a non-native speaker with not the best spelling/grammar/content...i just think eh, try to write in THEIR language before making fun! and you are soooo right! most don't even think about it that way. i remember a certain someone taken to task often with her language skills, and quite honestyl she took it in stride, such a great attitude. it used to piss ME off no end though. :o and i'd always think, and sometimes say.....go visit a german board and see if you do as well. :D

    well said kushi!
and 4-6 languages....you put most of us to shame! i can on occasion make a mess of my own language, forget trying any others......:p

all i am obsessed with is spelling.
i am only interested in my own spelling.
fuck i write all the time, it's me.
although their are cases where i may say something to someone
about their spelling. (mostly to fuck with em)
for the most part i don't really care unless it is my own fuck up.

posting and publishing poetry in the public eye calls for correct spelling.
the grammar can be fucked all it wants.
but for sum reason, spelling is important when writing books, ect.
sure some poetry has misspelt words on purpose due to some artistic
thingy the author wants in the piece he/she wrote.

pearly jamy tunes are riddled with fucked grammar.
music/lyrics period is filled with fucking bunk ass grammar,
    and it fucking rocks.
