question for traveling in NYC/LI

The setup:

So I'm going to NYC area this weekend to see my St. Louis Blues play the
Islanders. I'll be staying with a friend in Weehawken, NJ, but we plan on going out all day in Manhattan before heading out to Uniondale for the game.

The question:

Do we take the Long Island RR out to the game on Saturday night, or does one of us bite the bullet and drive? My friend that lives in Jersey has never used the LIRR before and sounds paranoid. Is it reliable? on time? can we leave manhattan 2 hours before the game starts and expect to be there in time and then take it back after the game and get home by Midnight? We'll have to take the PATH from Penn station back to Jersey, which will add some time to the trip home, but oh well.

Also, I've heard you can drink on the train, is that correct? That would be a big plus.

Yes. You can drink on the train and yes they are generally on time and reliable. The only thing is you'll have to take a cab from the train to the coliseum.
  • the lirr is very reliable, and yes, you can drink on them. there really isnt a stop close enough to walk to the arena though. i suppose you can always cab it. the trains are very safe, i would look into possibly taking it to Garden City which is the safest area around there. there are usually tons of cabs waiting outside the station. or you can always get a few numbers and call the taxi yourself. it might end up being a little expensive though (but saving on gas and tolls) with the train and cab fare.

    routine was the theme..

there aint gonna be any middle any more
  • thanks dudes. With a couple people splitting a cab it shouldn't be that bad, as long as we can get one after the game as well. From mapping it out, it looks like Hempstead is the closest station to the arena (about 2.5 miles), but is that not very safe? I'll keep your recommendation for Garden City in mind.

I'd go to Westbury. But you have a lot of options. (including Garden City, Merrick, Hempstead) If you want a cab price for two from Westbury you can call Stewarts Taxi in Westbury, NY.

Most all the lirr stops have cabs there most all the time...

I just saw your post... Long Island cabs charge per person....

To get a cab back to a train after the game you can walk right next door to the coliseum and get a cab from the marriott

Yeah... i think westbury to the coliseum would be about $7 for one... Don't know how much they add per person. I'd call them and ask....

    Have fun!

    GO ISLES!!! :D
  • whatever you do, don't go anywhere near the Hempstead Bus Station.
