...if you came across a document in work that gave all your colleagues salarys, and what the director recommended what payrise you were to be given, to also find out that:-
a) you were the least paid on the department and
b) your line manager knocked down your recommended payrise and gave more to another guy who had transferred from another department who was on £4000 more than you to begin with?!?!?!

also depends on how much experience the others have and what degrees they hold....so many factors.

someone in every dept. has to be the least paid. sometimes it also depends what salary you are coming in at.

We all did the same job, just that people started at different times. I was the longest serving member, and people were coming in on more than me. The company has no sort of pay scale at all and they just never brought me up to everyone elses rate. I'm the dick who ends up training some of these b@st@rds who are on more than me and half of them are f**king clueless f**kwits. And I stumbled upon the information by accident, so I can't say anything to anyone which adds to the annoyance!!!

    That is the usual scenario.
    I'd be pissed.

well then I think you CAN bring this up... if you stumbled upon it by accident. Sounds like you're definitely entitled to a raise.

hate to say it but welcome to corporate america. i've been there and it sucks.

you all have the same exact amount of years experience and same education? you could have started the job say coming from an old employer at $25k, and another at $35k - so since the other was making more, they are not going to lower their salary to yours - or up your salary to theirs. corporations and life are just not that fair.

But took the time to read it all????
Your actions sound well dodgy.Surely the minute you discovered the "accidental information" you should have left well alone.

Yeah its an absolute pisser that there are possible discrepency in the department but it is common that many people, mainly women are considerably lower paid than men for the same job and you dont know if the salary difference may be performance led with bonus and benefits or scale led via qualifications and experience.
My direct colleague is on about £3500 more than me because she has completed her social work diploma, but we do the exact same job and have the same level of responsibilty. When I complete my diploma my slary will rise in scale with her.

I think you need to put this knowledge to rest you clearly cant go to anyone about this as you will then be faced with the fact that you read what is clearly confidential information.

Get your resume ready-because everyone is replaceable, no matter what! I would put a few feelers out there and see if I was worth more somewhere else, if I get a good offer for more money somewhere else- I would then walk into my boss's office and let them know that I want a raise and these are the reason's why. Don't threaten to walk out because you have been offered another job but it will give you confidence to know you could if you have to.
If it is a no, for whatever reason-well move on. You will find that the person who asks for the money gets it, and those are typically the people who are going to the boss and letting them know everything they do rather than to just be noticed. Those type of people annoy me but on the other hand they do get pay raises more often.
I am a women in a man's industry, but luckily I am the best at what I do on a very consistent basis. If I found out anyone was paid more than me for whatever reason I would blow up and walk out, but don't follow my example! I am in sales and the proof is in the numbers, I don't know if you have any proof to support your pay raise. That would be key.

I have been in a past position where I found information like you did, I tried to ignore it to protect my job, but I found over time that I held an extreme amount of resentment and it festered inside of me to the point I hated to go to work and I hated the people around me because I knew they made more $, and that is no way to live-so I walked and never looked back.
I was also in a different position where I accidentally left a copy of my resume that I was working on in my boss's printer, I would have thought I would get fired immediately, but I actually got a promotion that time. I guess he knew I was getting ready to leave. Not done on purpose but it worked!

    Good Luck!

Yeah, I'd be pretty pissed off with that...But then knowledge is power and now you KNOW how little your work and loyalty to the company is appreciated. You ought to know your worth. You now know how they operate there and you can now try to find a new job....

    Just a thought.

I know the salaries of most people I work with. I have access to that "file".

It sucks because there are some incredibly worthless people here that make more then me!

    Oh well...

I work in HR/Payroll so I hear this complaint a lot. Imagine, every single person in my agency believes they are under paid no matter how many piss poor job evaluations they've had, or how often they call in sick, or abuse FMLA, or whatever...

Although a lot of bosses are too chicken shit to address performance issues and tell a person why they might not make as much as others, there is still a good reason for it. Usually...

Not saying that is the case here, but I hear this all the time.

i get paid $20 a hour and my company bills me out at over $100 a hr.
I get paid the least and produce the most amount of work.
Others have been here longer, but I produce.
