  • hmm... isn't it =sum (then add the column you wanna start with) : (then add the column you wanna end with?)
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you
  • Hit F1
  • Highlight the data then look for the sum button Σ on the toolbar...
    and click it...done.

or type =sum(cell#:cell#) in the formula window.

or just hit F1 and type in sum.

  • i guess i should have been clearer. i want how many of each year i have. like 4 1994 and 11 1995, but so it keeps a running total. so on another sheet i can just have the year with the total underneath. i know ill need to have the whole column highlighted but i dont remember the function.

    sumif is the function

sumif (your year cells, the year you want, the cells with the value you want to add)

sounds like you want a pivot table. go to data --> pivot table and then the wizard will guide you through it.when you get to the layout, you'll want to put the year in the rows and whatever you're trying to sum in the data section....

so you are counting the number of times a year appears in your data?

in that case, use the COUNTIF function: COUNTIF(range, criteria)

    ex) COUNTIF(A1:A20, "1994")

no problem....at first I thought it was the sumif that was mentioned, but then I re-read your clarification and knew that sumif would return some screwy numbers for that, so logically, it had to be countif

just glad I could help out....
