Florida Keys advice????

So long story short, my parents want to take my family, and my brother & his GF on vacation next spring. We wanted to go to the beach somewhere, so my mother decided that she wanted to go to the Keys. Problem is, that none of us have been there or know anything really about it.
We're looking for a relaxing week at a beach cottage sort of thing, sort of away from any tourist-type areas. From the Keys website, Big Pine Key and some of the islands around there sound nice.
Does anyone have any advice on where to stay or what places to avoid?
Thanks!

Bahia Honda was one of the best beaches I've ever been to!! I think it's on Long Key.. or Grassy Key.. I can't remember, but it's fucking so beautiful. The water is VERY warm.. kind of like bath water:eek: I found an abandoned lobster trap about a hundred yards offshore with an big octopus inside. When I went back to that spot to show my friend, the octopus was gone and there was a giant grouper there instead... and by giant I mean as big if not bigger than me!

I was there for 3 days in February and it was awesome. A place where you can get REAL key lime pie, visited the southern most point in the continental US. Down by the waterfront where the cruise ship docks saw the most beautiful sunsets and the Freak Shows. People with various talents show them off such as magicians, escape artists, acrobatics and others. Give them a tip and it makes their day for sure.
The beaches aren't spectacular but good enough, on one of our biking trip we did run across a 9ft nurse or hammerhead shark in 3 ft of water. Just real cool downbeat kind of place and we did dance at some club/bar in the center of town.

I like the idea of a laid-back place... We'll have our 1 year old son with us, so we aren't looking for fast past touristy places, but a place where we can relax, spend some time in nature, and maybe have the grandparents watch him while we do some snorkeling or whatever.

hawks cay in duck key is a great family place. Swim with the dolphins, get a boat charter, rent a kayak etc...and they have a "wet" playground for the little ones.
only bummer is no beach
