i heard 2 knuckleheads arguing today over what state washington dc is located in--maryland or virginia. so as the day went i wondered about it myself! so after a little research, i found out its neither, its on land ceded by both states, now called washington county, but technically not in either. im sure most of you knew that, but i must have slept thru that history lesson in grade school!! heh heh, me so dubm!!
My dad's last words to me: "Careful, son, I don't think the safety's on."

DC=District of Columbia, which means, in a nutshell, that is apart from the states.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

seriously though, i think i was born knowing that DC wasn't a part of any state. that might have something to do with being born and raised inside of the DC beltway

I'll take Washington State any ol' freakin time over that city, there's something (actually a lot of things) so toxic to the psyche about DC.

I think I was born knowing that too, and I'm from MA.

there is something I don't like about DC either, and it's hard to put my finger on. I may have to live there in the future though.

This reminds me of when I was in a hostel in the swiss alps. A bunch of people from several different countries were sitting around talking, a few amercians, a few brits, a few aussies...and this one australian girl goes "how many states are there in the US? 50?" and this american girls replies "no, 51." We all just sat there staring at each other for a minute...finally, we're all kind of like "no...50..." and this argued with the whole lot of us for like an hour- she truly believed there were 51 states. oh and might I add, she was a college student. maybe from the U of Colorado or something like if memory serves.
